"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

So beginners should never ask questions? Then how do they learn? By killing colonies by ignorance. As for "Age rasism" (Age racism perhaps?), how can someone be "Age racist" if they don't know how old you are? Even if I give you the benefit of the doubt because your first language is...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

I didn't say that, so don't try to put words in my mouth. Beginners will never be encouraged by sarcastic, belittling responses, but can be guided by POLITE correction which encourages rather than alienates.

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

No, they should be put on the right track politely, acknowledging that there may be alternative right answers, not belittled because they use a screwdriver instead of a hive tool.

Bumbling Keeper: You are absolutely right, had some of the comments on this site been delivered in person, a smack in the mouth would have been the only reasonable response. Moderators should be sanctioning those wishing to close down legitimate discussion, no matter how naive or ill-informed it...

    DLQ

Hi Drex, I'm in almost exactly the same position, with the addition of a continuous rather angry buzz instead of the usual quiet hum. Eggs are at all stages from newly-laid to emerging. I also have a number of drones on almost every comb, and a big problem finding the queen, who I reckon was the...

    How's the summer flows going?

Swn58: What you fail to understand is that I am a fan of BeeBase and slagging me off for having only one hive reflects badly on you. If you are that worried about EFB, have you chased the Inspector? Does having EFB in the area (which you say is not affecting your colonies) actually prevent you...

    How's the summer flows going?

If you read my post properly you will see that the paranoia I referred to was the "OMG Beebase is Big Brother they're coming to get me" type, not the "I have invested hugely in time and money and don't want to loose any of my bees by failing to do something within my control" type. If you read...

    How's the summer flows going?

There seems to be a common thread of paranoia in these posts. As a bee keeper of only 18 months with one hive and little experience, I was notified that there is EFB within 3km of my apiary. Was I worried about Big Brother? Was I concerned that men in white coats bearing straitjackets would cart...

    Is Chinese honey legally honey?

It is all bit academic to me. I am doing my very best to buy nothing sold or manufactured in China. If we could all stop buying from them (and it is very, very difficult) then they might stop manufacturing plagues.

    Swarm+ex-dronelayer combine?

Eggs? Lots, and until last Monday brood at all stages of development. It looks like the queen may have stopped laying though, which is a bit early. I'll open up again next week to check.

    VAT on safety equipment (UK/EU)

Does anyone know why suppliers of bee keeping safety equipment are allowed to charge VAT? SE/PPE should be zero-rated VAT in the UK and EU.

    Swarm+ex-dronelayer combine?

I used the framed-paper-follower board method this year. About 5 minutes after introducing a swarm to what was probably a cast there was an excited buzzing lasting a minute or three and then everything continued as normal. Opened the hive 4 days later to find the paper still in situ, so I reckon...

    Cedar?

Western Red Cedar source I bought the Western Red Cedar for my Top Bar Hive from Somerset Timber, who live a few miles west of Taunton, and who were very helpful. I believe that the cedar is grown at Stourhead, and is only a few percent more expensive than the softwood equivalent.
