Has anyone had worse overwintering by switching to poly?

I'm with you on this one, I'm convinced on the merits of insulated hives, I'm just wondering if something is lacking, based on the research papers cited, I'm inclined to think that an in hive supply of water may assist them... I'll need to build my apiary up to do the experiments myself.

 That was ME :seeya: with my imaginary friend ... err you can see my imaginary friend ? :icon_204-2: ;) nice to see that we can have a disagreement without it becoming unpleasant, thanks :cheers2:

    Your duck is dead

Very clever, reminds me of a vet's that I know of, in which the first question they ask you is, "do you have insurance" what's the difference, you say, "about a thousand pounds" they say!

So a beek has an A.m.carnica (known for it's docileness) virgin that open mates with A.m.m drones (in which docileness is not a commonly reputed characteristic), and the resulting colony six weeks later is a tad testy; you blame the C, I'll blame the M, and we'll agree to disagree :) ;) I would...

"pedigree" - a genealogical table, chart, list, or record https://www.dictionary.com/browse/pedigree Clarification: This is not a sniping question, although I know you (and some others) think I stir things up a bit, all I'm actually doing is probing for facts (truth), etc. You mention your...

    Amm

To paraphrase a beekeeper who claims to know stuff... There should be a section for this Hogwash... which this is!!! oh the irony...:nopity: Yes, I too have heard that if anything breeds with the M Lineage (Amm mainly, but also Ami) the M's latent aggression can dominate.

    Amm

Thanks for the Book recommendation :) To be fair, there are good breeders of Amm's here in Ireland, but high honey yields (beyond 30 kilos) is very rare, and whenever claimed ... is privately doubted: Aggression is an issue, good bee handling is a MAJOR factor, but they seem to have a shorter...

Has anyone had worse overwintering by switching to poly?

Just think about this a bit, that actually may be an advantage, I mean my bees (in the wooden hives) were laying up a couple of weeks ago, frames of brood about to emerge, BUT over the past (now almost 10 days) they've been confined in their hives, and even if they could have flown, there's not...

Has anyone had worse overwintering by switching to poly?

:owned: That was very funny, and very apt :winner1st: he'll not understand though, click on my YouTube link and it'll explain why he can't understand it ;) ... by the way one of my wooden brood boxes has warped at the bottom, not much but enough for me to make sure that it is the bottom one of...

Best Place to buy a NUC

Just remembered this recommendation that I was given, I have not used it ... yet, https://ecowoodtreatment.com/ one simple treatment, apparently 100% safe for bees, organic and lasts forever...

Best Place to buy a NUC

For PINE wood you MUST treat, I'm sure we've all seen how quickly pine wood deteriorates when exposed to the elements. But for CEDAR you don't need to treat (from what I've read and been told). I idealistically intended to use beeswax as well, but settled for mixing Turps. in instead, the final...

    Amm

He never said that. So there! :p ... but in all seriousness, if you can get me a quote from him I would appreciate it, as I regularly hear this quote attributed to him, but after reading most (that I know of) of his books, articles, journals, lectures (including German) I have been unable to...

Has anyone had worse overwintering by switching to poly?

mmm, you make a good point, especially when you read the other comments here, it appears that they make a noticeable difference in severe weather, this year we didn't really have a Winter!

Best Place to buy a NUC

That's a good point, I mentioned in passing the other day to a Beek that my colonies where into two brood boxes, I was told many beeks here just use one throughout the year, or sometimes a brood and a half (honey super), I have a different strain of bees. Personally, I went for PINE, and have...

    Amm

Cheers, you mean indigenous, not endemic, as Amm is found elsewhere beyond it's original habitat. Also remember some of us are more concerned about disease resistance (and other characteristics), rather than honey producing, just a thought, no need for us to have a falling out about it :)

Has anyone had worse overwintering by switching to poly?

I think the research on this subject is pretty good, in that insulated (poly) hives over-winter better, and build up quicker, however like has been said by more experienced members, one really needs 100's of hives for comparison, but I'm willing to go by the existing research, in which I'm happy...

    Pin Test (Update)

Here in Ireland (from what I have seen and very recently heard) the only thing being seriously selected for is color, I have met / spoken with several new beeks which are complaining that their bees are aggressive (they don't mind the swarmyness). I went beyond the Pale and got bees which are...

    Pin Test (Update)

B+ I MAY be WRONG, ... BUT I seem to recall that Marla Spivak said something about the cell being (partially?) opened causes the mother mite to leave the cell, BUT she (usually) cannot begin another breeding cycle, as the premature opening of the cell messes with her reproductive clock, I THINK...
