    Writhing bee?

No. I don't use insecticides. Gorse... Havn't noticed any in flower. My garden backs onto a farmyard. The farmer removes any gorse on his land but I'll have a look on the marsh. No dandelions around here but my next door neighbour has some blue crocus' out of sight in his back garden. :)...

    Writhing bee?

Not apple :willy_nilly: Sorry peoples. Went and had a look. Apples in bud, no flowers. Some magnolias in the hedge are flowering. Bees bringing in bright orange pollen. Crocus maybe? Thanks for your replies. I think my bee must have fallen foul of a fly spray... We had some wasps...

    Writhing bee?

Hi, My bees are flying well and bringing back lots of, I think, apple pollen. (I live next to an orchard.) While I was watching the entrance I saw a bee behaving oddly. It landed on the landing board but instead of walking to the entrance it went head down tail up and it's abdomen twisted...

    Wasp protection and returning bees...

Hi, Made a waspguard out of a plastic milk bottle held in place by drawing pins. Problem solved. There are still a few wasps hanging around but they mainly seem to try and ambush bees outside the hive. I have been watching for about half an hour a day and only seen two wasps try to get in. One...

    Wasp protection and returning bees...

ericA and Steve :thanks: I left them alone and most of the bees are now landing on the alighting board and walking in. A few fly in as far as the entrance and a few are still falling onto the grass. One fell into the wasp trap  so I have had a look at the Waspbane site. (Clever, but a...

    Wasp protection and returning bees...

Two days ago a wasp walked out of the hive carrying one of my bees. Yesterday morning a wasp arrived, the air temp was 14oC and no bees were out so I killed it. A little later another wasp arrived. I killed it and as I did so another wasp flew into the hive entrance. As it was still quite cool...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Drinking my morning cuppa saw a wasp walk out of the hive carrying one of my bees. A little later another wasp arrived. I managed to knock it to the ground and beat it to death with my flipflop! :ohthedrama: As I did so another wasp flew into the hive entrance. As it was still quite cool I...

    Hello from Cumbria

Thank you both for the welcome. Yes, my friend is assisting me and I joined the local beekeepers association nearly three months ago. (I didn't know he kept bees until then as I met him nearly a year ago through another club!) It tends to be mild and wet all year round here and this summer has...

    Hello from Cumbria

Hi, Now retired I am finally in a position to keep bees. A friend gave me a nucleus which was moved into a National last week. Fingers crossed :) So far they seem to be doing ok and are very calm.
