    nitrile gloves - long cuff

I tried marigolds but they didn’t fit like a glove and I tried several nitrile glove makes even the garage ones I found them to thin, so I wore a few pairs and too short so I buy the ones from Edd China who use to be on wheeler dealers, and his grease junkie webshop...

    Wasp Problem

Couple of wasps flew into our house last weekend. In all the many, many years I’ve lived up here we’ve never seen a wasp around this area until this year and then then we got hammered with the little blighters. Luckily I’d already reduced the enterences by the time I saw them this autum but...

    Brood/half or 14x12 national hives.

I’ve came from a double brood family but have been a 14x12 fan for a while and if you’d have asked me last year I’d have said go 14x12 everytime but this year that all changed and I’ll be going back to double brood next year. Where I live I don’t usually get summer honey so in several years of...

    Linseed oil

Me too and my soft wood hives with this on are several years old and look well and function great. I have more soft wood hives done in linseed which were my fathers and he started the linseed hive tradition here at home I think back in the 60’s. We carry out the exterior recoating 3 times a year...

    are wax moth getting immune!

I’d have though a garden shed wouldn’t offer much more protection in cold conditions than anything being stored outside during winter would it? We no longer store paint in our shed as the pots regularly use to split when the water based paints froze. This last winter we lost some new wooden...

    are wax moth getting immune!

I’ve never had wax moth in 25 + years but 3 years ago a friend of mine showed me the effect of it on his frames so I started methodical burning sulphur strips in the metal chimney holders, all bought from T’s, in my bee shed ( large plastic garden shed ) and this year I’ve lost all of my brood...

Has there been less swarms this year?

So apart from 2 Welsh beekeepers, it seems swarming is down, significantly in some places. How interesting as I would have thought with the weather being as it’s been and the temps very hot even into the nights, that queen cells and swarming would have been worse not less.

Has there been less swarms this year?

This year we’ve not seen any swarm cells at all in my home apairy ( 20 hives ) and I’ve only been called to one swarm where as last year I did over 30 swarm call outs. My hives are bursting at the seams so it’s not a case of there being a lack of bees, all the queens are old as I don’t kill...

    Varroa level everyone?

I’ve had very low mite counts this year so far and not seen any DWV. Only needed to vaporise OA on one of my 20 hives, the rest were either no existent or very low on the tests I ran.

    Heather 2018

4 supers totally filled and capped on all my hives with heather honey already and 2 more supers are drawn out and being filled. I wish I’d have been able to start with predrawn frames but had to start with empty foundation and some skewer frames this time. This is the most honey we’ve ever had...

    Plastic sheet as crown board

I’ve moved from OMF to solids a few years ago and since then have found my hives brood production has gone up, and now brood and cells goes all the way to the bottom of the frame, plus my honey production has gone from very little to good amounts. I live in a very damp and windy area on the...

    Maqs

I’ve tried it over 3 years and every time had queen issue on the 8 hives I tried it on. I’ve called the manufacturer to ask what to do in my double brood and 14x12 national hives before first using it, as I’d read and heard some different instructions on how to use it, and even when following...

    Heather 2018

We’ve had our best crop from bell heather this year, over 40lb from each of my 14 hives and the ling has been out for 13 days and I’m already up to 3 supers on each hive, 2 are nearly capped and 3rd supers partially filled. I’ve put 2 more supers on each hive as they are going great guns. This...

Nuc/ Colony wanted south Shropshire area.

Thier description sounds just like my area where my own apiary for the last 14 years has been permanently based directly in a heather moor and I think I’m well in heather area as I travel about 4 miles once I past the first signs of heather and gors to get to my apiary ( and my home ), and my...

    Slugs

In all my years of beekeeping, I’ve never had slugs in my hives before and this year I’ve got them in every hive, up between the tops of the frames. My hives standard about 2ft of the ground so I’ll go and have a look if I can find some copper tape on the internet to add to the hive stands legs...

Good You Tube Channels to subscribe to

I’ve gone off Norfolk Honey due to his much sponsorship plugging as well, plus he does ramble on a lot before he gets to the interesting stuff and point for watch.

    Pollen shortage

No flowering anything where we are yet and even the daffodils in our garden are still not open, again showing how late everything is. Even the gorse is till not yellow here which is very unusual. When the bees are going out they are coming back with no signs of pollen and when looking through...

Mobile honey extracting line for Anglesey beekeeper

I think they mean they have just been told about this forum subject and thread, not the actually forum it’s self.

    Plastic - NO

Well done to the OP for contacting Thornes about their new plastic polish containers, I really don’t think plastic polish containers is necessary now a days. I don’t think Thornes argument about metal corrosion being a problem is actually the reason for them changing to plastic. I believe that...

What can I do with nasty but prolific hives?

Like Heather, I also use a Old purpose made beehive cover cloth with a metal frame letter box opening, depending what I’m doing and how the bees are behaving and it makes a world of difference when a hive is being a pain. Where I am there are so many things against us when we come to do...
