    Honey Super

Hi All I have a hive that wintered extremely well. I have a Brood and a half with plenty of stores and brood. I put on a super at Easter and it is now almost full wth 9 full frames with around half of them sealed. I have just put on a second super underneath this one, was that right? Should I...

    Aggressive bees

Hi My wife and I started beekeeping last year, our first colony was as you describe yours. I remember one early morning, after a windy night, just having a quick look and a bee flew 15 yards from the hive and stung me above the eyebrow! The hive were prolific and eventually swarmed and since...

    Beekeeping Suits

Hi all, My wife and I started beekeeping last year and have made it to the end of the season with a hive and a nuc, both which seem to be doing ok so far. We bought our suits last year and didn't go for a top end suit because our initial outlay was spiralling!!! Now we have a modicum of...

    New beekeeper.

First visit of my mentor So this morning was our mentors first visit to our new hive. Comments were good. Strong hive, lots of bees, new eggs, grubs spotted, plenty of brood, no queen cells, about 4 queen cups. He suggested we remove the queen excluder and have a one and a half brood box and...

From what I remember from the chat I had with the membership Sec. They did pass on information to the SBI but registration was up to me. Personally I think it's free advice, cost nothing and may well be useful in notifying diseases in the area etc. A good thing I think.

Hi everyone, just an update, new hive is going well, super place on last week is having comb drawn on the frames but as the weather has been a little rubbish, not as fast as previously. Having joined the local BKA group, we went to their first beginners open hive session at the weekend and met...

Thanks merrybee, all done now, not too much hassle, still a few angry bees about following the re-housing yesterday. Thanks for your help.

Do I just put the whole super on with all 11 frames?

    New beekeeper.

Ok everyone, full size hive now installed. All bottom brood box seemed to be full of brood, I put them in order, 2 frames from the front, I then put 2 frames from the upper brood box at the front and a further 3 frames at the back, quite a bit of capped brood evident on the front two but a...

So new hive has arrived, a paynes poly national. So it has space for 11 frames, I have 12 in my 2 nuc brood boxes, what do I do with the other one, which one do I ditch. If I interpret the advice given on this thread correctly, I put the oldest brood frames near the centre and the others either...

    New beekeeper.

Just thinking out loud, with the new hive, a paynes poly national, would it be prudent to also get a second brood box? The hive comes with a brood box and 2 supers. What about a feeder?

sounds like a good plan. Do I follow the advice earlier in this thread when transferring? i.e. Bottom brood box in the centre and the upper frames either side of those? Mark

Ok, so from the majority of your posts it is clear that the 2 brood box nuc is ok to bring on the colony but once big enough it needs to be in a full size hive. This has now been ordered and should be here Tuesday. So next question, do we do our usual weekly inspection as normal (Sunday) or...

    New beekeeper.

Is that because the colony will get much larger and then the height of all these stacked upwards becomes unwieldy?

    New beekeeper.

You are correct, that is the setup I have at the moment. Why do I need the larger brood box when I have as many frames in one brood box above the other? If it's not a good idea to do that, why are these kits designed this way? I am now confused as I was advised that this would be a good starter...

Thank you all, I have had a paynes super with frames delivered today. I was hoping to just stick with the Paynes for the time being or is this a bad idea? Will there be honey available to harvest so soon? or should we let the colony increase first? Queen cells, look for now? remove or leave...

    New beekeeper.

Hello everyone, So my wife and I took the plunge and 2 weekends ago we became new Beekeepers. We have joined the local Beekeepers society and will hopefully get a mentor at the weekend when we go to our firs training session. So this is what we have done so far: Took delivery of a paynes poly...
