Removing supers after artificial swarm into a nuc...

Thanks very much - that sounds like a good idea. I haven't got any drawn super frames so will put in some foundation while I extract and then swap them for the super afterwards. Do you then have a brood and a half for the whole of the summer? Thanks Philip

Removing supers after artificial swarm into a nuc...

Hi, I did artificial swarms into nucs on two of my colonies on Wednesday two weeks ago. I had a look at them on Sunday and it looks like they have been filling the supers pretty quickly. One has two supers on it and was a pretty prolific colony before I did the split nearly refilling a...

Queen cell in my top super

I'm on a single brood box. I'm pretty sure they must have moved the egg up there - it was a super that I had put back on last Sunday having extracted it. I already had a super on top of the brood box so they look to have moved it quite a long way... I removed the queen on Wednesday and there...

Queen cell in my top super

I just went back into my hive having artificially swarmed into a nuc on Wednesday night. Whilst removing all queen cells down to one i found a queen cell in the top of my two supers. Is this quite usual? It seems to be a long way for them to have carried an egg...

Artificial swarms but only have spare nucs...

I did mine last night about 7.30. I would be interested to hear how you get on too. I imagine I will be slightly behind you as I dont think I left any queen cells behind in the queenless original hive so they will have to build up emergency queen cells. One of the two hives was much stronger...

Artificial swarms but only have spare nucs...

Thanks. The two queens I found were the original laying queens in each of the hives. Unfortunately I could only get into the hives quite late after work and they were full of bees so I might have missed some queen cells yesterday but was feeling quite pleased with myself for having found the...

Artificial swarms but only have spare nucs...

I checked my hives today and found queen cells being built in 2/3 of them... I don't have any more hives but have 2 nucs. Thankfully I found the 2 unmarked queens and moved them both into the nucs together with 1 frame of brood, 1 frame of stores and 2 frames of foundation. These were moved...

Thanks again. I'll try not to make that mistake again...

Thanks. I thought something might have been gnawing at them...

What could have caused this? Is is a mouse/ worth worrying about?

There were bees but this hive has definitely been the slower to build up of the two I have. I've removed these two frames and replaced them with foundation...

1st year not going very well...

Thanks for your help - i read different opinions about the number of queen cells to leave in the original hive so left a couple in case there was a problem with one of them. Looks like I need to go in on Friday and reduce both again...

1st year not going very well...

A quick follow-up...when I check for queen cells, should I then reduce the queen cells down to 1 in both colonies if they have built more?

1st year not going very well...

Thanks for your replies - it appears I have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I'd thought I had had a a pretty thorough look for queen cells on Saturday so am surprised to have missed 4. Could these be emergency queen cells that have been built since then?? I have two WBC hives and...

1st year not going very well...

Hi, This is my first year and things are going quite according to plan... I checked my hive on Saturday and found some queen cells together with the queen so did an artificial swarm (moved the queen into a new hive with foundation and put into the position of the old hive with thee super on...
