Beekeeper Wanted - Surrey / Hants

I am posting this on behalf of a local company who have four beehives at their premises in Camberley, Surrey. They are looking for an experienced beekeeper to manage the hives and carry out the following: 1. Maintain the hives, including a weekly visit in the main season, monthly during winter...

using a posh oven as a honey warmer

I have left them in for various times, from about two hours to a couple of days if necessary, but I always turn it off at night. Otherwise I leave the lid on, but check it and give it a quick stir as it starts to soften at the edges first.

using a posh oven as a honey warmer

I do this.. We have a Neff oven which I set at 40 degrees, remove all the shelves and stick the bucket in. I add a digital thermometer as a double check to make sure the temperature stays at around 40. I find it works well.

OSR honey - no csbinet - ideas?

If you want to use your oven but with a lower temperature, just use the oven light. I warmed some honey in my oven last year set at 30 degrees, but found it was gradually getting hotter. After some trial and error I actually found that if I put the oven light on but had the oven itself switched...

    Disappearing brood

Hi everyone, I have an issue with one of my hives I'd appreciate your views on please. On 1 Sept I noticed there was only sealed brood, no eggs or larva. I didn't see the queen so added a frame of eggs and brood from another colony. When I checked six days later, there were no queen cells...

    Handling wax moth

Another vote for Certan. It really does work. I also put one of the clear plastic crown boards in between each super of frames as an additional barrier, so if there should be any wax moth, it is limited to one super only.

Hive lid knocked off and rained on..help...

Just want to say I feel so sorry for you. You must be gutted, I know I would be. It's always easy to be wise after the event, I would have thought a paving stone would have been plenty sufficient. If it was vandals, who's to say they wouldn't have undone a strap. Hope they got stung - lots!

    Selling honey

I ordered labels online from bespokelabels.net last year. He has a good selection and information on what you need to include. He also prints sequential lot numbers to the labels and I thought they were cheap, truthfully. Might be worth a look..

Slow Cooker use for candle making - any experiences?

Forgot to say, I bought the slow cooker on ebay for about £7.00 I don't use it for cooking, just for wax!

Slow Cooker use for candle making - any experiences?

I use an old slow cooker for melting my wax. When I'm cleaning the wax I add water with the cappings and lay a muslin inside the dish and then set it on high (mine has high and low.) It takes a couple of hours to melt, so it's not quick, but I then remove the muslin with all the dirt, let it...

    Mouseguards on poly hives

Thanks for all the advice, I can't take the credit for the question but would like to say that the answers have been really helpful to me. I do have a question regarding the Payne poly feeder for full size hives. I found I had a lot of dead bees who had drowned under the plastic cover. So much...

    Mouseguards on poly hives

It would be a great idea, except that the entrance block is plastic and therefore I don't think you can hammer nails into it. That said, I'm not a Carpenter!

    Mouseguards on poly hives

Hi Rachel, I too have the Paynes poly hive and have been wondering whether or not I need to do something re mouse guards. I agree the four hole setting is insufficient. I currently have the entrance block in as shown below I was planning to measure the height of the gap as not sure if this is...

    Paynes Poly

Yes it does. It's about 6 -7mm, so would not crush the bees.

Can you use Certan on Wet frames?

Thank you very much for both the suggestions, I do appreciate them. Thank you also Erica, I did actually put the three obviously affected frames in the freezer on Friday and I could swap them out with another three tomorrow. Sometimes I think as a beginner, I maybe try and over think the...

Can you use Certan on Wet frames?

Hi everyone, I've had some super frames stored in my utility room for a few weeks, waiting to have Heather honey pressed out. Today, whilst pressing out the honey I noticed a couple of frames had evidence of wax moth and eggs. I've put these frames to one side and have cut out the obviously...

    Paynes Poly

I have Paynes Poly hives and have one of these on a hive right now with a feeder in. I can't remember where it came from but it looks like this: https://www.paynesbeefarm.co.uk/feeding-feeders/clear-box-feeder-small-1.5-litre/ To be honest though, I prefer the Paynes Poly feeder, which I use...

    Well that didn't work...

Great Idea, I think I will do that, just to give them a helping hand. Thank you!
