    When to replace a Queen

Replace both with good quality stock. The red one is getting too old anyway and will probably supersede this year.

Would you convert a manual extractor to electric?

I did this to the same extractor many years ago. I like tinkering so It wasn't too hard a job. what I did was buy a metal extractor stand. The electric motor had a box fitted that changed the drive shaft 90 degrees. On this i fitted a V pulley. Took the handle off the extractor and fitted a...

What's flowering as forage in your area

as above, Bramble is just about to pop with the odd flower out already. Are we a little early this year?

    Good quality frames

I do agree that Thornes frames are a little tight, but I buy seconds and expect to do a little manipulating when assembling them. I pre-drill all the nail holes so avoid splitting the wood and shave a tiny slither off two opposite corners of the bottom bars. It's all a bit time consuming but I...

    Good quality frames

i always buy Thornes seconds and use their wax foundation. I trade in my cappings wax for the foundation which saves a bundle. Frames i get in the sale in bundles of 50. dirt cheap.

When is a six frame Nuc not a six frame nuc?

I've just reread the posts and my questions are Why on earth is a beekeeper with 20 hives buying nucs. To have 20 hives you should have enough knowledge and experience to make up your own. and if they are a noob, what are they doing with 30 colonies.

When is a six frame Nuc not a six frame nuc?

I do supply the odd nuc (think i have sold 5 this year) and i would feel that i cheated someone if i put undrawn foundation in a nuc. As above 6 frames of brood should not be expected. 4 plus 2 of stores and pollen is typical. I also think that an over populated nuc is counter productive as the...

Introducing a virgin queen into a queenless colony that's just swarmed

from past experience, VQ are a nightmare to introduce. I find it more successful to put a QC in a small mating nuc, then less resources are used up if the VQ either fails to mate or she is a duff. Apidea mating hives are useful.

    Honey colours

I'm no connoisseur but i have to agree with Erichalfbee. After being dragged up on my mothers cooking I have no real knowledge of fine cuisine. Years of boiled potatoes, covered in bacon fat and garden peas have had their tole on my taste buds. In fact hardly a Sunday dinner went past with out...

Nuc failed to retain introduced queen

As above. Always done it this way. Easiest and probably the best way to do it. The only problem is recognising when the bees have rejected your new Q and even then, just leave her for a few more days in the introduction cage without removing the tabs and they'll soon accept her.

    Bee Farm

There are two sayings I try to live by (but fail miserably), Never judge anybody by your own standards, never be judged by other peoples standards. And.... Give someone enough rope and they'll hang themselves. Looks like you don't even have to supply the rope sometimes.

    Missing Queen

I looked the other day in my garden hive. Just 3 frames in from the cold side and found sealed brood the size of a bull elephants testicle. That's as far as i went and sealed up the hive. I use the garden hive as an observation and test hive for my other production colonies. It's bursting with...

Thanks everyone for confirming my suspicions. Saw the info on the .Gov website but needed to be reassured I was reading it right.

    Selling honey through shops

Is honey taxable. Just looked on the net and Imported honey has an import tariff of 12.5% and is taxable at 20%. Uk honey I understand is 0% vat (I could be wrong) as it's a food stuff. If the above is true, how would a shop or outlet calculate the final price of a locally produced jar of honey?

    Selling honey through shops

Lets not forget that 50p goes to the cost of the jar and label. so I would be getting £4 lb for honey. I'd be happy with that if I didn't have to go to all the trouble of jarring the stuff. Also, looking at the other 'artisan' pickles and preserves that were for sale, I doubt she was going to...

    Abelo..Lyson Open Day

I was there about 10.00 to pick up a load of poly roofs and supers. My friend got an extractor. I was tempted to snuffle a chocolate cream egg but was happy just with the free coffee. Got a free pen also. They run a nice business there. I like it.

    Selling honey through shops

Last year I approached an 'artisan' cafe/gift store for the wealthy trendy bearded mob. The owner was really enthusiastic about selling local produce and supporting local producers/beekeepers. I offered my jarred/labelled honey at £3.25 per 1/2lb but the owner wouldn't go beyond £2.50. She...
