    bees clustered underneath hive

I've discovered the same thing after being away for a couple of weeks, my brood box has no brood but is full of honey. The bees seem to be building under the hive. Do I need to put in a couple of empty brood frames to encourage the bees to stay inside? I'm hoping the queen is under the OMF...

    Hornet visiting hives

I was checking my hives today when a hornet came hovering round. I must admit I was taken back by the size of the thing, it was easily an inch or more in length. I took a swipe at it with my hive tool and it cleared off, but I'm sure it will be back again. I thought only the queens got to that...

    Second hive entrance

I've noticed at the back of my open mesh floor there is a slight gap where it meets the brood box. It has a slight bow where there is a knot in the wood. Some of the bees are using it as a second entrance, though looking at it I would have thought it was too small for them to get through. Should...

    Are these honeybees?

I'm glad I read this thread. A friend of mine has bees going under their tiles on their roof and asked me if I wanted them. I had a look and I thought the bees looked a little small. I was gong to set up a bate hive but I wont bother now.

    Bees and horses

I was told the same thing, just after I'd been told by a friend I could keep my hives on his farm. There were horses next to where I put my hives but it didn't seem to make any difference to the bees.

    slugs

I've used nematodes and they worked for me. You could also set up slug collection places. I put cardboard on the ground not in cultivation and along some of the paths. The slugs seem to be draw under it, I just collect them up and chuck them to the chickens :)

And then there were none ...

I've just lost my one and only hive to hornets and wasps. I closed down the entrance on Wednesday which gave the bees a chance to see off the wasps though they were still getting in. I also noticed a few hornets flying around. I prepared a new site for the hive on Thursday away from the farm...
