    Too early for swarm traps?

No activity at all now. I have put one in my garden and one near my apiary.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cold and cloudy today so only did a quick check on stores for 4 colonies. All are storing nectar in the supers. Some capped honey as well which surprised me given the recent weather! They are working OSR and dandelions. All colonies a bit tetchy....one especially aggressive.

    Bees are very grumpy

Yes, I have one colony that has been very ill tempered over the last two weeks. They were aggressive during last inspection! I put it down to the cold weather.

It’s died right down. Still the odd one coming to have a look. Back to cold weather again though!

    Scout Bees

They also seem to be surveying the immediate area around the hive. Some seem hesitant to go in

    Scout Bees

There always seems to be a few buzzing around. They fly round the bait hive having a good look then venture inside and seem to be inside for a while. I am sitting in the sunshine watching them now. Not so many today but it it warming up. The larger numbers appear in the afternoon. It might be...

    Scout Bees

Thanks. South facing, semi shaded area. Put a frame of old brood comb in and some swarm lure around the entrance

    Scout Bees

I put out my first ever bait hive last week. 1-2 scout bees turned up within 24 hours. For the past couple of days there have been 12-20 bees showing an interest. Does scout activity like this keep increasing (if they are keen on the possible new home)?

    Bees in Dung Heap

    Thank you.

    Nuc Box with shallow frames

Thanks again for the advice. Moved them into a new home today. They had built comb below the shallows frames but it was easy enough to take the frames out and I managed to keep it all intact. Full of brood and stores.

    Bees in Dung Heap

Hello all, I noticed a lot of bees on a a dung heap near my apiary. Any thoughts on what they are interested in? It’s only horse manure/old shavings from stables and some recent grass cuttings.

    Too early for swarm traps?

Thanks. So basically if they turn up and settle in a tree just leave them to it?

    Too early for swarm traps?

Hello all - I have put out my first ever bait hive in the garden. Used BB with an old brood frame in it. Half a dozen bees have turned up today showing a bit of interest and they are going in and out quite regularly. Sorry if this is a stupid question but if I am lucky enough to catch a swarm...
