Does anyone have any contact info for Murray? I need to get in touch with him regarding a talk next week; and I think he's a bit too busy to check on here. If anyone does have a mobile or email for him, could they either pm it to me, or ask him to check his pm's? Many thanks, Skyhook

    Nice tip! .

    Creosote

For that reason I definitely wouldn't. Cuprinol should be ok in that situation as less fumy- or just use tantalised timber.

    Nosema

Not ironic at all, quite possibly the reason why this one succumbed. I feed thymolised syrup as a protectant, but it does rely on them taking it which can be a problem if there is a good late flow.

    Apis ceranae and varroa.

Exactly that. In Cerana they can only breed successfully in drone brood, so the infestation never reaches problem levels.

    Margaret Thatcher day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in. :banghead:

    Avoiding exponential growth

You have to remember that the AS will have the old queen. If you want extra colonies they may supercede her, otherwise you're going to need to re-queen to avoid them getting swarmy. If you don't then once the new queen is up and running in the new colony, squish the old queen and re-combine...

    Module 3 nosema question.

Nosema apis looks like pudding rice; ceranae is more like basmati.

Who Knows What This Disc Is?

And there was me thinking it was an LP format from the 70's used for prog rock tracks in excess of 4 hours..

    Fondant Feeding - When

I don't know the weight of your hive and bees, but that would suggest to me that they must have a good 15kg of stores. When they start brooding in spring they want a mixture of stores and empty cells or there is nowhere to lay. If you are able to monitor regularly, I would be happy to let that...

    EMERGENCY langstroth crisis

Sounds as though their situation is improving. Have they got any stores at all? If not they may not have the energy to get to the fondant, in which case a small amount of heavy syrup squirted into the cells around them froma squirty bottle may be appropriate: but this would be an emergency...

    Moody bees

Smoking the area will partially mask it, briefly: but is no substitute for a darned good wash before the next hive. .

    Moody bees

I've had exactly the same thing. My gentlest colony (and therefore in the priviledged position of being in my garden) are an AS from my most aggressive; and I've had pretty much the reverse in the past. How anyone can breed an open-mated 'strain' with predictable characteristics, heaven only...

Severe criticism on my wood hive design, please

One comment- a very experienced beekeeper of my aquaintance used to have a couple of Dartingtons, and found them very good for producing bees, not so good for honey. If you are planning to go into nuc production it may be useful. And the severe criticism- there are enough hive types without...

    Arbutus unedo

I didn't know they worked it. We have some around us (south coast), I'll bear it in mind when locating hives.

It's quite possible that dragon myths are based on findings of fossils. It's generally accepted that the Cyclops myth comes from trying to explain mastodon skulls. http://www.larrysimages.com/images/large_images/farrington_mastodon_skull_ow_vv1596_114.jpg .

Interesting you should quote letters on that. Paul basically 'bought out the brand' and re-wrote Christianity in his own authoritarian image. The Christian church owes much more to Paul than it does to Jesus. Read the bible without Paul and you get a very different image. .

    strange honey problem

It is possible for honey to be within limits, but when it crystallises the crystals are pure sugar which frees up water so you can get areas which are more dilute. The 'waves' could either be areas of crystals or bubbles through the honey, or areas of different concentrations which refract the...
