    Wise Words from the Wise

I probably would have done the same, I got the beekeeping bug late last year and it was too late to get a nuc then, so i did the course over the winter and will be getting a nuc in the next couple of weeks.

    Get Yourself An Epipen.

I recently heard of a lady beekeeper that got stung, had a reaction and when she was administering the epipen she hit the seam of her jeans with the needle and broke it. I dunno if she died or survived but i'd say if she did survive that she'll not do that again in a hurry.

    straw skeps

I have watched a dvd by Paul Metcalf and when he catches a swarm in a skep he ties a bed sheet around it till he gets it to the hive he wants to put it into. He then unties it and shakes it either into the hive , or a board at the entrance and lets them walk in.

    Bees are usefull

A man was driving down the road and ran out of gas. Just at that moment, a bee flew in his window. The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?' 'I'm out of gas,' the man replied. The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of...

    Caucasian Queens

The AMM is very quiet and productive and suited to the Northern Irish and Irish weather. If we had the better weather of England then a different strain might be the way to go. If I was to change I would probably go with Carniolian.

    Amm

Yes you can buy Galtee queens, They are in great demand and very hard to get, The only way you "MIGHT" get one is to get your ascosiation to order one for you, I know the mid antrim asc does order them but they are in such short supply that if they order 10 they are lucky to get maybe 4.

Exams all done, now bring on the bees.

There was 30 of us on the course and only 2 had bees already. I did the course through the local agricultural college so dont know if that makes it any different. But what i do know is that i'm glad i did the course before i get any bees and not the other way round.

Exams all done, now bring on the bees.

I did my written and practical exams for the preliminary beekeping course this morning, I strongly recommend any newcomer that you go and do it. Yes you can read books and learn things, but you cant beat the hands on experiance with a compitent beekeeper. Also i now have a full class worth(30)...

    defra,

I work for DARD which is the equivilent to DEFRA over here in northern ireland, I work as a health and welfare inspector for mostly cattle and sheep. I always appreciate being brought in for tea and buscuits as it gives an informal atmosphere to talk about the inspection. So I'd suggest bringing...
