Kirklees Council Allotments and the Honey Bee!

I hope its not to try to persuade you to give up the fight or face the consequences!!!. I keep bees on my allotment, but the difference in mine and your councils policies couldnt be further apart. I have to praise Knowsley councils interest and encouragement with my bees, after seeing my apiary...

    Thanks Admin.

I must admit, I felt the same until I tried getting hold of Amm from breeders over here too. I now feel that any Amm is better than non at all though, time will tell. I just wish Bibba would stop trying to find them in every possible location and start breeding and distributing them before they...

    Thanks Admin.

Yep many thanks admin, maybe people with Amm will now be able to exchange/sell queens and start the ball rolling with regard to expanding the amount of Amm colonies. Something Bibba should have done years ago!!! I have just taken delivery of a Amm queen from Bickerstaffes, with a couple more on...

    BBC2 Springwatch 8pm June 4th

All of this anti BBKA rant is getting a bit tiresome, sure it could be run better and I honestly believe that in the coming years they wont have a choice but to change. But as a focal point of british beekeeping they could do a lot worse. their PR has brought a hell of a lot of interest and...

Neat thing to try with apideas

After reading some things on that web page I think I'll take half of what they say with a pinch of salt!....seems like a badly translated web page at times

Neat thing to try with apideas

Got a few apideas currently stocked ready for some queen cells, when I saw this on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXJjWbK4HBo I might just give this a try!!:)

    the novice

I think the main difference between now and say 15-20 years ago is that back then, a prospective bekeeper had to go out of thier way to find out more about the craft, and most were thought of as eccentric at best! These days it has been in all forms of media (TV, radio, internet, newspapers...

    Expensive SN4 frames?

Chuffin Nora!!!....didnt even think about checking for ready assembled ones!!!...I'm Gobsmacked!....I stand corrected :svengo:

    Expensive SN4 frames?

Must be me being a total tight wad then!!....over 3 quid a frame sounds blimmin expensive to me. Still cant find anywhere in the thornes catalogue where they're selling frames for over £30 for ten though. Maybe I've just got short arms and long pockets?

    Expensive SN4 frames?

Am I missing something in this auction? According to the Thornes site I'm looking at the SN4 frames are £11.21 for 10 Whoevers bidding for these must be a right numpty's...

Uniting at the end of the season

Or you could just overwinter the two colonies?....would be a nice backup in case you lost either one over the winter

    Removing swarm cell

Yep, but if he doesnt try it, he never will have any experience :) If it was a cell that was going to be removed anyway what is there to lose?....except a cupful of bees?

    Removing swarm cell

You should be fine with a cupful of bees their insulation qualities are excellent, I've never had a problem with them. As mentioned though, protect the QC with a roller cage or baking foil just to be on the safe side if possible. I prefer the Apidea even though they are more expensive, you can...

    Great letter in Scotsman today

I think that says it all really doesnt it?. Being ex air force myself, and hearing how defence cutbacks are effecting our forces morale and ability to perform thier duties. It cracks me up to see the scale of the abuse of government spending.

The perfect cruise for your mother-in-law!

    Bumping the queen off

You could always use ether....easiest way to get it, is in a can of easystart for cars (which is almost purely ether)...about £2.50-£3 from halfords or whereever. Just spray it onto a pad of kitchen towel at the bottom of a jar, should work in seconds by putting them to sleep. Just dont sniff...

    UK bred Nuc discussion

I must admit I very reluctant to stick my head above the trenches here.....BUT.....what is this trend for current year queens? What is wrong with buying a nuc with the previous years queen in it?, there seems to be a mentality growing within beekeeping circles, or so it seems for replacing...

    Bee Excrement & Neighbours

Having seen that, I'd just say nothing...half of that could have been done while he's driving along the road. Isnt it up to him to PROVE it is the bees? Even if he proves its bee crap, they still may not be yours. I'd move them and then put a couple of empty hives in thier place...see if he...

    Bee Excrement & Neighbours

Some people obviously dont have anything else to worry about in their lives do they? I'd do nothing for the time being unless the council demands you do something, and even then dont they have to prove it is your bees?, sounds a fair distance from your hives to be talking of massive amounts of...
