    Apidea Boxes

I find apideas are great, the only thing I find though is that bees soon run out of space in them, at the very least get the larger feeder that sits on top of the apidea and allows use of five frames instead of three. I use a super on all mine together with a feeder. This gives me 10 apisea...

neighbours liveing next door who are not happy

I didnt say YOUR hives or back yard/garden were a state, just an observation on some I HAVE seen!!! I think YOU are missing a point here, you are keeping bees that you cant guarantee will not sting anyone, you dont know if anyone is hypersensitive to stings. You also state that they dont go in...

neighbours liveing next door who are not happy

Problem with all of this is, so far you've said they've been ok other than ONE incident!!!....but there you have it......it only takes one! As for them putting the wendy house near your bees, well sorry, but whereever they want to put items in their garden is up to them, I wouldnt take to...

    Transferring nuc to brood box

I'd disagree with that, I've known colonies to work their way from the centre, over to one side then be stranded there clustered in cold weather and starve to death. I prefer to make sure they start against one side of the brood in winter, and that way they can work their way across the brood...

    Thick rubber stingfree gloves?

Well same as a couple of others on here, I now use thin leather gauntlets, with large surgical/nitrile gloves over them , my dexterity hasnt been compromised half as much as I thoght it would. And yes I agree I will still get stung but untiil I've been sensitivity tested for beestings, I'm...

    Thick rubber stingfree gloves?

Maybe after 20 years of beekeeping I should pack it in as well then, if all shops should stop selling leather gloves? Maybe all the people on here dismissing gloves would like to have a word with my wife and convince her that it would be good to spend another night in resus fearing the...

    Isle-of-Man, disease free hope?

Total pile of cobblers, We were talking about this very thing at our BKA meet at the weekend with Martin Smith, and apparently someone on the IOM decided to send some VARROA free queens from the island to a mainland beekeeper. Someone in their wisdom decided this would make good media fodder and...

    My Apidea swarmed today

Yep as said, give them more ventilation by sliding the front entrance cover down a little. Also you can get a large feeder for the apideas, I use these all the time, and remove the small feeder inside the adidea to give them more room and to make it easier for them to regulate the colony...

    Feeding with a glass quilt...

I think PH was referring to contact feeders. I've used contact feeders ok, but only in a situation when the feed is going to be used quickly (prime swarm on a boxfull of foundation for instance) only way I've got them to stop leaking is to squeeze the bottom (or top) as you invert it, so when...

    reassurance needed please!

I am using kidleather at the moment, and they are a very snug fit, and I find I can do almost any job that I can do with thinner gloves. I keep propolis problems down by wearing large latex or nitrile gloves over the top of them and chucking them away when I finish. I think most people wearing...

    Bee basic

Pete, I've got exactly the same suit, to replace a rather worn budget suit also from Bee basic. I think its a great suit for the price. Never had a problem with the veil blowing in my face (unlike some fencing type ones I've put up with in the past) and I prefer this type of veil for the...

OMG what do I do now?

Blimey o' reilly what a palava just get rid of all but one queen cell, job done!!! If there is a queen and she decides to swarm then you'll loose only 1 swarm. If you leave more than that there is always an outside chance more swarms will follow. I would advise against going through ANY bees...

OMG what do I do now?

First thing is to take a deep breath and stop flapping :D Next go through the colony and leave just one QC Hopefully there is a queen in there, if not you have covered yourself by leaving the QC to emerge. If there is a queen in there hopefully she will sort out the capped QC you leave. In at...

Fitting 14 x 12 frames in a National stadard BB?

If you havent got time to sort anything else out, what you've just suggested will work and give you some time to breathe. You can then decide on wether you want to go for 14x12, double brood, or brood and a half.

    Virgin Queens everywhere!

Its making me twitch just reading that!!!...was remarkably similar to what I went through when I went a bit wobbly a few weeks ago....had anything between 40-60 QC's in that one all emerging as I went through them.....good fun isnt it? :willy_nilly:
