One of our hives appears queenless, but also doesn’t

An update Yes indeed, we have now! Found two larvae and squashed them. Well, we saw a very few eggs last week and spent the week with bated breath. Today, we saw larvae and eggs... and then we found the new queen. That's two new queens spotted in two days So I think we'll wait and see...

    Bees Drowning With Internal Feeder

You need hivemaker's thymolated syrup: http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6513 I have about a gallon left over from last year and it hasn't developed any nasty slimes or molds - it's certainly good enough to induce robbing...

    What's eating my electric fence?

Hmm - two feet up an electrified net sounds a bit high for a rabbit - they'd have to put their tender little feet on 7kV of fence and that would hurt (it stung me a bit, and I've had a couple of pints of cider already). Our (inside) fence only went up again because we lost a layer to a fox, so...

    best price on honey extractor

Bought a manual 8 frame stainless radial from the same maker and the same place. It is more money (and not just a bit) but you don't have to turn the frames, it works well and seems like it will last. I will admit that if you're only spinning a few frames then there'll be more honey on the...

    What's eating my electric fence?

Is it a top to bottom electrified net? Ours has had a hole chewed in it on the bottom strand. Going through you choices, I'd say rabbit for ours because it's right at the bottom; also it's inside a fence with no badger-sized holes in it and all our chickens are still alive! I must thank you...

double brood, 14x12 or one and half, experience please!

All ours are on 14x12 (with the odd BS brood from purchased nucs). One point worth considering is the weight of a 14x12 frame full of stores; it's quite heavy. It's not a problem for the bees (so far as I can tell) but worth thinking about for the beek. I suppose the counter-argument is that...

Strange noises from a bait box - mystery solved!

That's a good tip. We put the same low density polystyrene over the crown boards in the winter, with open feed holes, and they barely touched it, so we were surprised how quickly they went through this - the hole in the photos was made in about 2 weeks.

Strange noises from a bait box - mystery solved!

As they say, I saw this and thought of you! :) We had to go out to sort out a nuc this evening (frame feeder being robbed) and couldn't resist cracking the lid on the hive with this colony in it. They are doing pretty well - capped brood, eggs and stores. We found the queen, marked her, lost...

Consequences of using Apiguard now? (June)

Welcome Here are the Apiguard FAQ, which cover some of your questions: http://hpmt.co.uk/clients/vitaeurope/documents/VitaApiguardFAQ201008.pdf In particular: and I have to think that they mean for you to put an eke between the two brood boxes.

Cast swarm and improvisation of equipment

I seal the inside with PVA, which seems to work ok, and doesn't smell too bad when it's dry. To stop them drowning you can float a bit of wood inside the feeder. Or, like Hombre: http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10912&page=2 you can make them narrow enough that the bees can...

Strange noises from a bait box - mystery solved!

We needed a box for a cast, and we only had a bait box – we didn’t think that would be a problem. We didn’t have enough frames to fill the box, or a dummy board, so we used a couple of bits of low density polystyrene insulation to dummy out the gaps – that didn’t seem like it would be a problem...

    Drinking from old slimy pond

Bees seem to like filthy water - ours ignore all sorts of decent water supplies and insist on going to the stagnant water trough that has all sorts of decaying matter in it.

    is is worth the time/effort??

Here are some photos of the (poorly!) finished hive made from 18mm ply and odd bits and bobs, together a picture of my 11 year old son putting some bees into it.

Question about bruising stores in the brood box

Would you worry about it at other times of the year?

Question about bruising stores in the brood box

If there are stores in brood frames and I bruise them to encourage the bees to move the stores up to a super, should I worry about treatments that have been applied when the brood frames were in the hive? I wouldn’t put Apiguard on the hive when there are supers on, but what if some of the...

    Macro '0n-the-wing' shots

You could try trap focussing (sorry if this is one of the tricks you've already tried). I know how to set this up on a Nikon, but not on Canon; the Wikipedia Autofocus article has a reference to how to get different Canon models to trap focus. I guess you'd still need a flash to capture the...

    How to make a roof?

The Scottish Beekeepers Assoc. national hive plans: http://www.scottishbeekeepers.org.uk/learning/html/plans.html are a good place to start. Basically, you just need to make a box with inside dimensions of 18 ¾ inches by 18 ¾ inches by at least 5 ¾ inches and put some bits of wood inside it to...
