    Advice needed please

I am nothing like an expert, but here are some observations: If you want confirmation of the sound, search youtube for 'queen piping' and you can hear some examples. I know that someone has posted an audio file of the sound on the forum too, but I can't find it at the moment. Sometimes the...

    Queen Pheramones

We requeened on colony last year. We removed the old queen at 4pm one day and put the new queen in at 10am the following day - and removed the 4 QCs that they had made in 18 hours.

    Hello

Welcome. You might get some honey this year, you never know. We got 1/2 jar off one colony in our first year and it was the best honey ever (at least we thought so). We used to let visitors look at it... Take a look at Huntsman's post in this thread...

    Artificial Swarms swarming again

We had a reasonable (good?) success rate with new queens (about 80%), but we have ASs that are ready to go round again - including one where we missed a QC and found our marked queen and another unmarked queen in the same hive last weekend (help, where's all the kit gone). We don't have enough...

a dead parrot riding a bike in scotland

Good luck to him. How is he going to get that suit case on his bike? :)

    Getting nervous now

If you are buying frames, do look around for the best price and do consider seconds. I have just ordered some Th06nes seconds from C Wynne Jones. I ordered 100 SN1s Thursday late morning by telephone (and had a very nice chat with the lady on the 'phone). They arrived yesterday before 9am...

    Bees in an empty hive

I can't see how it could hurt (other than attracting robbers / wasps to a smaller colony). One other thing you might think about is whether you want to treat them for varroa now, whilst they have very little brood (assuming they've not been in the box long). I looked at collecting a swarm from...

    Bees in an empty hive

We are 20 or 30 miles NW of you, and we have had flow return this week after about three weeks of very little. Most of our colonies seem to be building stores again this week - a couple of them at a fairly rapid rate. We had been feeding one colony that was completely out of stores, but are...

    computer geeks only

The other thing to think about is whether you want the drive to be powered by your USB port or an external power supply ("portable" USB drive vs "desktop"). We use several, both at home and at work, and they work well. Some routers now have a USB port on the back; you can plug a drive into the...

Easy uncapping for the hobby beekeeper?

Higher concentrations of suspended flakes or dust can cause respiratory problems... but mica dust is used as a base to hold colouring agents in certain powder-based cosmetics, I beleive.

Easy uncapping for the hobby beekeeper?

We use a hot air gun. You can probably get it cheaper elsewhere, but if you search the homebase website for "Bosch Heat Gun" you'll see what I mean. One person holds the frame up, shuts their eyes and hopes for the best; the other runs the hot air gun over the frame. Ours has three heat...

    Proposition - BKF 2011 Meet

What about having smaller, more local meets?

How many queen cells do you leave and why?

:iagree: We were taught to leave more than one "just in case", but I've had enough of chasing cast bees around the place, so they get only one from now on.

    Honey extractors, still looking

I got a hand-driven 8-frame radial from Clive. FWIW, I've found it a nice product at a reasonable price from a nice bloke.

    Crownboards and roofs

:iagree: So much so that we've got a couple of spare ones that loaf around by the hives in case we need them sharpish. Also, I would much rather have to lever a popolised crown board off a hive than a propolised roof - at least you can get a hive tool in to lever the crown board off. Dave...

    Hive busy with drones

Welcome. You may be interested in a recent thread about numerous drones in a hive - here: http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10877 Also, you might be interested in "At the Hive Entrance" by H. Storch, which I found very informative in helping to decode what's going on whilst...

Queen cells or not queen cells??

Do they look like this: As you can see, about 3cm long, like the last two joints of a small pinkie finger, in this case hanging down at the side of the frame. Obviously, it'll only look like the second photo if you go at it with a sharp knife!

    is is worth the time/effort??

...and don't look too closely at the frame rails... which were another casualty of the need for hives surpassing the time to make them. I had ordered some rails from a supplier that we've used before along with some other things that we needed, but they still haven't reached us because one of...

    is is worth the time/effort??

Thanks very much I wish it was that clever! :) I had originally intended to put rebates in the sides and so the ends were a little longer, to sink into the rebates. Then I decided to glue and screw the sides because I needed the kit rather sooner that I had expected, and in my haste I...

One of our hives appears queenless, but also doesn’t

Thanks for those tips - we marked her yesterday as soon as we found her because we were so relieved to see a queen in the brood box. We'll keep an eye on the cappings as you suggest.
