    Mini mating nuc plans?

Thanks for the info and links. I've got quite a lot of offcuts of 18mm ply that I was planning to use but I need to do more research about the workings of these boxes before I make any (or give in and buy some:rolleyes:) Working nights atm though so no chance of reasoned thought lol

    Mini mating nuc plans?

Just wondering if anyone here makes their own mating nucs and if anyone could point me in the right direction for good bax and frame plans Thanks Huw

    Disaster - again

I ran a virgin queen into the main hive and one of the nucs. The main hive killed theirs but they've made a few nice looking QCs. The one in the nuc was accepted but one of her wings doesn't look too good so I'm not holding my breath for her. If she fails I'll put some eggs in for the nuc to...

    Queen rearing a different approach

She sounds indestructable lol. Bet she was dizzy after her spin though:D

    Dilemma?

There's a similar question on another thread here somewhere, I'll do a link if I come across it. The advice given was to put the nuc into a full size BB and then combine the Q- hive on top of it, seperating the 2 with newspaper that has some holes pierced in it. Make sure there are absolutely...

    Are your bees making honey?

Strong winds sloping site and shoddy workmanship:rolleyes: My home made stand collapsed down the slight slope, no doubt aided by a strong tail wind. Lesson learned though;)

how to incourage bees to draw out foundation

:rant:The arguement from my point of view is the arrogance and agression displayed in posts. Personally I'm sick of seeing posts being slammed and ridiculed, this is why I post so infrequently to this forum. Advice here is often superb (has helped me on a multitude of occassions which I'm...

    Dilemma?

Personally I'd go with a test frame. I had a similar issue last year and put a test frame in. The bees didn't make any QCs but the virgin started laying a week or so later. If they make QCs then you know they are Q-. At that point you can pull down all the QCs and combine with a nuc;) No doubt...

    Are your bees making honey?

One super almost full of nectar and another with a huge amount of pollen and some nectar. Not capped and then the hive fell over. They're building QCs as I type :(

how to incourage bees to draw out foundation

Sorry to join yet another argument BUT there is such a thing as a June gap (maybe bringing in a little but no major flow, at least in my locality). Also the weather has been pretty crappy over alot of the country for the past week or 2 and forecast to continue. Last week I fed 2 litres to each...

how to incourage bees to draw out foundation

There won't be much in the way of blossom to forrage for a few weeks so feed with syrup to help boost the colony. I use 1:1 (1lbs sugar to 1 pint water)

    Disaster - again

Thanks for the kind words;) The stand collapsed sadly. Concrete blocks from now on and a very painful lesson learned:mad: If all goes well from now on I should gain 2 colonies plus sort out the last of the varroa during the gap in the brood. One minor bit of luck is that this has happened at...

    Disaster - again

Following a disasterous winter, my one remaining hive was doing superbly having filled 2 supers with nectar and pollen. I put them onto double brood and the queen laid in about half the frames, all despite the varroa troubles. Then, yesterday as I went to check on the bees and add supers/food...

Mentor in South Wales (valleys area)

Haha, to be fair the others on the course don't have their own suites or at least they didn't last time I saw them. We'll stand out like sore thumbs:D

    Cappings for mead...

I mad a mad guess at quantities last year and am pleased with the results. I did use the hydrometer on one of the 6 demijohns I set up and the sg was about 1.090. No idea what it is now but it tastes pretty good although not clearing very well; it still has a bit of a haze to it. My recipe:-...

How long till honey is capped?

It depends on the air temperature, type of nectar and moisture etc. Seems to take forever sometimes:rolleyes:

    June Gap?

Lots of Hawthorn still but I don't think it will be there much longer. Other than that there's not much in my area so I'm still preparing for the gap, just in case;)
