    Asian Hornet - Update

:) Yes please. Do you have any Vv workers? Does anybody have a dead European Hornet, for comparison?

    Hives and bees

I was browsing Gumtree earlier and spotted an advert for a flow hive.

To exchange or leave them as they are?

:yeahthat: No point in saying the same thing twice, but that's probably what I'd do. I'd also try to get some insulation above it.

    Contaminated beeswax foundation sheets.

Errm - it should have read, "How do invisible impurities get removed". :sorry: Any of the various '-icides', including pesticides that somehow find their way into hives. Beekeepers also talk of pathogens being locked into wax, do these get destroyed when wax is being recycled into new foundation?

We could have told them that!

    Bee Farmers apprenticeship scheme

True, but there are generally more apprenticeships these days and some include training that leads to an HND - which is worth a lot more than some degrees. The thing about the BFA apprenticships seems to be that, so far, I think most of them have been taken by family members who have some...

    Advice re varroa treatment

JBM - I expect you've already mentioned it, but when and where did you hear/see Prof Martin? Is his research linked with the chap from Exeter, whose name I can't recall.

    Contaminated beeswax foundation sheets.

So some of it gets bleached? How do invisible impurities get improved?

    Contaminated beeswax foundation sheets.

It's an option, but a lot of people don't want to wire their frames. I've always found it strange that a fair few of the so-called organic, or treatment-free beekeepers, buy foundation without thinking about how clean it might be, or where it comes from, and then spend time each week sprinkling...

    Wales with no treatments?

A quick search for beepods shows that it's a new name for a top bar hive. http://www.treehugger.com/sustainable-product-design/beepods-bring-back-an-old-design-for-better-beekeeping.html

    Fondant

If it's brick hard then smash it into bits with a hammer and give it to the bees. They won't mind. Otherwise you can cut it with a knife that's been dipped into warm water, or just spray the surface with water and leave it for a day. I have heard people talking of putting a block of hard...

    Asian Hornet - Update

The "large funnel = talc" seems to do well. Does anybody know how the 'talc' is included in the design?

    Advice re varroa treatment

It's my understanding that DWV B is symptomless, does not result in deformed wings. Once a colony has bees showing symptoms of DWV A (deformed wings etc) it is carrying a lot of passengers - bees that will only eat and be looked after by other bees. Killing sick bees by squeezing them or...

    Feeding with fondant

I agree with JBM about using bakers fondant rather than something from a beekeeping supplier. It's cheaper and does the same job. Don't buy 'fondant icing', it is not the same. I put fondant on top of a queen excluder* and below the crown board, some people put it directly on the top bars...

    Advice re varroa treatment

I know there are at least three beekeepers within a few hundred yards of my main apiary. One of these beekeepers is self-taught, having read a book about beekeeping, so doesn't need to know any more. The beekeeper is not a member of any beekeeping group or association, and this apiary is...

    Advice re varroa treatment

Nope, because neither apiary is being treated this year. Various reasons, but the main one was that conditions didn't work out as I'd expected or the forecasters predicted. Then the heather crop was late coming off so it was too cold to use thymol properly and, although I then planned to use...

    Feeding in Poly Hives

True, and some beekeepers only give their bees fondant.
