    Another lost colony story

So here are the photos - on a quick look through the BB, no brood, one empty supersedure cell, plenty stores...

    Another lost colony story

I didn't have my phone to hand. Will do later.

    Another lost colony story

Not starvation nor, as far as I can see, varoosis - no DFW visible, nor mites on bees. Just a thick layer of dead bees on the floor. Almost none on the frames. Hmmmm...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Added a second set of 1kg chunks of fondant to 2 of 3 hives. Goodness, they're getting through it. Must be the warmth...

    So true!

I'm curious: so when you say Welsh is the first language in your area, does that mean that Welsh is what you routinely hear people speaking in the street, shops, and homes?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Phew - thought I'd lost two of my three colonies - but no. I went to see if they needed more fondant and at first, before suiting up, on lifting the lids to look through the glass quilts, I saw one colony eating fondant, most of which was left from the chunk I gave them a month ago. But I saw...

    Asian Hornet

Thanks John, for the warning. It's appreciated. The response you've received is probably because we've been on alert for the last few years, and we have had plenty of information about the threat that V. velutina poses. In my BKA, for example, we've had trap making exercises, have an Asian...

Abelo varroa tester 3 in 1

If it's built like the Lyson extractor I bought last year, it'll be a well-constructed piece of kit.

    Reading the waggle dance

It's in Honeybee Democracy, where he describes how the waggle dance on the surface of the swarm points to a potential hive. He interpreted the dances and succeeded in finding the locations the bees were describing.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Did nothing. Worried about the cold (I know, they'll cope, but I can't help anthropomorphising).

    Healthy Bees Plan Review 2020

68% of beeks had AFB in 2018 (p129). Wow. But only 36% said they had a problem with varroa.... Hmmm.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

They came out to greet me as I added fondant and installed mouse guards. How lovely!

    Enormous stray honeybee nest

Apparently, bees can't make honey without a queen. Who knew?

    Beekeeping reflections

The two things I found most problematic in my first two years were: - Underfeeding over winter leading to starvation - Swarm prevention and control, leading to - guess what - my bees disappearing over the horizon

    Hive Alive

I think the key issue here is whether stuff works when used in a controlled experiment (ie science) or if stuff works anecdotally. the two are not the same. And yes, my grandmother does suck eggs.
