What did you do in the 'workshop' today

It's that time of year, so today I've been doing some wrapping. No, not that kind! I'm not sure I'm quite ready to attempt a full-size car yet, but I don't think the bees will mind the odd wrinkle. It's cost me just over £1.20 per nuc by buying offcuts and if it lasts longer than paint...

    Card sales

I guess it doesn't have the NFC functionality? As it turns out, despite only being four years old neither does mine. I'm trying to decide on the best way forward now. Tap to pay would be very convenient, but frankly I don't value a mobile phone sufficiently to pay hundreds of pounds for a new...

    How much!?

I've just seen a post on the FB page for a local village offering "pure honey" for £8/litre! I am sorely tempted to "have a word". James

    Rodent disaster

They've not even gone in the easy way, there. James

    Rodent disaster

Honestly. Rats are just like that. I think they have some sort of mental health issue. They don't seem to know how to accept that chewing through something may be a step too far. It's probably brought on by eating too much concrete or something. James

    Hive Insulation

Looks like we're going to need a deeper roof! (As no-one said in a film, ever.) James

God I love growing our own

Weirder and weirder, said Alice... These are the pepper plants in the polytunnel, earlier today. All looking a bit sorry for themselves. I'd have removed them already if I'd had time. On the other hand, these are the plants in Frankenstein's greenhouse, also earlier today, whilst I was...

    Rodent disaster

That would be my initial concern too. James

    Is it really honey?

BBKA News for Jan 2025 has arrived very early and contains an interesting article about the new DNA testing method developed at Celvia. James

    Card sales

Well, SumUp must be considered a big fat fail :( When I try to complete the second stage of signing up, I'm told that they need access to the camera and can't continue without it. But camera access is already enabled! And in fact, the instructions that they give for enabling access to the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I can get into my bee shed again! :D Whilst I appreciate that many of you won't quite share my excitement at the reinstatement of full access to my apiary storage facility, the lack of it had become a bit of a nuisance. Recently the shed has become something of a dumping ground for all things...

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

I know these are JBM's thing really, but this one did really make me laugh... James

    Is it really honey?

I think Yorkshire Tea is made from wood shavings, waste engine oil and the evacuated steam from stationary engines :D James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

You can even get them in chrome and carbon-fibre finishes :D I absolutely can't claim credit for the idea though. It was posted here a couple of weeks back -- a long hive made from PIR and then covered in car wrap with a camouflage pattern. I was aware that car wraps existed, but the idea of...

There are almost certainly worse. The Mitsubishi Pajero in Spain, for instance. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Serendipitously (if that wasn't a word, it is now), whilst I was tidying up last Friday to prevent various bits and pieces becoming a low-flying danger to life and limb, I realised at one point that I was holding the very offcut of EPDM that I intended to use for covering the last three hive...

Ooh, Professor Branestawm! One of the early ones too, given the illustration by Heath Robinson. I struggle to recall any of the stories now, but I'm sure there was one where he invented "invisible" glass. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

But if you hadn't taken it, you'd have got cold and would have needed it :D James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

In a miniature form, yes, I guess they are similar to tea chests. Without the foil lining :) I am somewhat reluctant to heat the workshop because of the condensation issues it causes. Other than heating it to the same temperature all the time (which I know some people do, particularly when...

    Card sales

Are SumUp and Zettle still the "providers of choice" for taking card payments and honesty box payments? Can either do payments for multiple items of different values (if we had a number of different items available via an honesty box, for example)? James
