    Non-Smoker

Ah, no. I mean like in these photos: The flat caps over the veils are an interesting addition. I wonder if that was to hold the veil in place? James

    Non-Smoker

Which is odd when considered in conjunction with the beekeepers who used a pipe fed through their veil to provide smoke. Perhaps that was just a dream... James

God I love growing our own

I was assuming that the candle was melting right to the edge and molten wax was running down the outside, to my way of thinking meaning that the wick was too large and the candle was burning too much wax at once and getting too hot. Again I'd assumed that a wick that was too small might melt a...

God I love growing our own

Well, thus far my greenhouse peppers are still looking healthy. Several mornings this week I have gone out to find frost on the other greenhouses, but the glass on the one with the candle is clear. The wick is, as expected, too large and there's a bit of a puddle of wax left in the tin once...

    B&Q

And also appear to trade/have traded under the names "Easibee" and "Actiasbee" and have associated brands that suggest to me that they just buy certain ranges of stuff from (probably) China that they can easily drop-ship. They do however say on their website that they are "completely dedicated...

    B&Q

Looks like they don't really have it in stock at all and they're just fronting for a drop-shipper. Could be that someone relatively high up in the management chain just decided that they needed to sell bee-keeping gear for some reason. Perhaps (s)he had heard that it was an upcoming thing. James

    Smoker box

I've found the composite corks don't work particularly well. They seem to break up or split quite quickly. I'm thinking it must be necessary to drink sufficiently expensive wine that you still get a solid one-piece cork :D James

sole trader business account?? where and how

If you form a limited company however you will need to submit proper accounts to companies house every year as well as doing a company return. If you store any data on a computer, the ICO will try to get their shovel in as well. I doubt you'd see much change from £750/year. James

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

I don't know where people get such bonkers ideas. Chemtrails are clearly the means by which the government keeps suggestible parts of the population in unquestioning ignorance of reality, thus making them easier to control. And anyhow, I've trained all my bees to carry a parasol when they're...

God I love growing our own

Thus far I've used the stub-ends of a few small candles and burnt two at a time, one at either end of the greenhouse under an upturned clay pot, when we're likely to get a frost. The candles sit in small tins on top of bricks, just to try to prevent a fire in the event of an accident. It's a...

God I love growing our own

I'm hoping they won't. The wicks would be correctly-sized for the candle were it made of beeswax, but I believe paraffin wax can use a smaller wick. Of course I don't know that the originals were actually made of paraffin wax anyhow. They could be soya or something like that. James

sole trader business account?? where and how

I've had Starling recommended to me as a good bank for small businesses. We currently use Tide and I can't say I'm overwhelmed by them. I believe they're just a front-end for someone else's banking service, which has caused difficulties on occasion. For example it seems to be very hard to get...

God I love growing our own

Evicted my first batch of candles from their moulds this morning and took them for a test drive. Putting them into the freezer for half an hour before "demoulding" was a revelation. The candles were almost rattling around in the moulds by that point and pretty much fell out when I turned them...

God I love growing our own

This afternoon I have been making candles. A beekeeper's craft perhaps, but in this case nothing to do with beekeeping... My wife and I collected together all of the unusable ends of (non-beeswax) candles that we've had after using them during the many power cuts we had in 2024 and I've melted...

"Smokers urged to quit as one cigarette' takes 20 minutes off life expectancy'" the Guardian, 30 December

Some of his acting work is outstanding, too. "Mrs. Brown", for example. And there's a lovely made-for-television piece called "Down Among the Big Boys" where he plays a thief whose daughter is marrying a detective (whose father is also a policeman) who is trying to catch the perpetrator of a...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

If you can't find the queen and there are eggs and charged queen cells... Knock down all the queen cells. Move the original hive a good few metres from its initial location. Put a new hive in the old location with one frame of BIAS from the original hive. The new hive shouldn't swarm because...
