    Late Swarm

Thanks. No I didn't have any treatment on. ( For some odd reason I haven't detected ANY varroa on any of my five hives- another mystery)

    Late Swarm

Hi all, Yesterday I looked in the brood box of a not very strong colony, expecting just continued egg laying. Found no eggs or larvae but two decent sealed Q cells and a couple of what seem to be tiny sealed Q cells. (23 August five frames had some brood/eggs at various stages). So Q has...

    Queen Cell Conundrum

6-8 weeks ago I caught a swarm in a bait hive. I didn't notice their arrival. I left them in that box. When I looked inside after a couple of weeks there was no brood/eggs. I put in some brood frames and left them. The same each time I looked over the last few weeks. No evidence of a queen...

Dealing with a wasps nest - not really bee related

Perhaps you've already taken action. One year we had two wasp nests in the. ground, not far from our beehives. After dark I poured a large saucepan of boiling water down each. Seemed to do the job.

    Uniting Queenright with Queenless

Hi, Thank you so much. Maybe I'm not mad after all.

    Uniting Queenright with Queenless

Hello all, I want to unite a queenright colony + its supers (BB1 & Supers1) with a queenless colony + its supers (BB2 & Supers2). Reading BBKA Guide to Beekeeping (2nd ed.) I'm a bit mystified. The book would suggest that the order from the bottom would be: BB1; newspaper+ QX; BB2...

What happened in my colony please?

Pargyle. I take your point completely. I was inaccurate in my first posting. Lesson learned. "Bad tempered" was probably too strong. Thanks again.

What happened in my colony please?

Folks, It's distressing me a bit that, as a result of my question, the thread had become so bad tempered. On the actual question, I've re-read my notes, and (while I'll never know for sure) the notes do not say I moved Q cells. In fact, because I had the step-by-step notes printed out, I think...

What happened in my colony please?

Thank you very much for that. In answer to your questions - I look in the hive every seven days. I try to see the Q, otherwise to see small larvae as evidence that she was there recently. I look for Q cells and if there are any I take action which differs depending on whether I find the Q or...

What happened in my colony please?

Thanks. Yes, I've since found her in the moved hive.

What happened in my colony please?

Thank you very much for the thorough reply. Yes, I should have been more explicit. In answer to your questions: The cells I found were charged, not sealed. I moved the hive 50m so that the foragers would return to the old site and go into my new Blue hive. One hive would have a Q and the other...

What happened in my colony please?

Hi all, Could anyone suggest what may have happened here. 11 May found Q cells. Can't find Q so I Moved hive away 50m. Put new hive on original spot. This is my Blue hive now. Transferred a frame with Q cells from old hive to Blue hive and filled up hive with foundation etc. 18 May removed...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Watched about a dozen of my bees fly into the poly tunnel where they spent time pollinating my apricot tree. Lovely.

    Apiguard "failed". What to do?

Thank you everybody for replying. As a result I will change my approach next year. But for now I think I'll put on Apivar. Are there any reasons for not doing this? Thanks.

    Apiguard "failed". What to do?

Put Apiguard on 3 hives on 3 September. Same time gave fondant, using super as an eke. Another Apiguard after 2 weeks. Through Oct I measured Varroa drop. Unused fondant removed 22 Oct. Continues to be 10-12 varroa per day on all three hives. There are plenty of bees in each and brood boxes are...

Dead Queen but no emergency cells

Michael, thank you. That's very generous. I'll try that. Usually I just rely on the presence of eggs or very small larvae. Incidentally, I've found a great free app for my iPhone called Magnifying Glass with Light or Mag.light. It really does magnify and since I got it I can see eggs with it...
