    Black honey bees.

Hi all, can anybody tell me anything about "black" honey bees? I am being given a nuc containing a small swarm of black bees tomorrow. I am wondering about their likely origin, temperament etc... I am only a beginner, so apologies if this is a "no brainer" to most of you, I'm sure it won't be...

18 Nationals Stolen within last few weeks

Rugbee.... Is that you on the BBC news website? Did you do an interview about the thefts? Cos if it's not then someone else has had their bees pinched as well..http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8001061.stm

The smartwater is a good idea but only if the hives are recovered or if anyone offered one for sale, has an ultra violet light to check it over.

    rhubarb

I put a clump in in April last year.... the whole thing died, so I put a clump in last month and I don't seem to be doing very well with that either. I must have rubbishy soil or something..:(

    Established Colony

I feel sorry for the bees, and I'm sure you are gutted you can't save them, but if they really are rude, they are not going to care less if you hurt yourself doing them a favour, so unless you have a beek mate that lives close to help you, or a scaffold tower that you can borrow for free...then...

    12 hives stolen Whitby N.Yorks

How very upsetting for the people that have lost them, I cannot imagine any old Tom, Dick or Harry having the balls to steal hives tho.... and how on earth did they spot the camouflaged ones??

So, does the insurance that you pay with your association subs cover theft and vandalism? If it does, how much do you get back for say a whole hive, colony and honey stock?

    One brood box or two?

Actually Raysa... that makes quite good sense to me. As a beginner, the last thing I would want to do is lose her Madge whilst checking. Knowing which brood box she is in would make life a lot simpler. Maybe it's not "the done thing" but it would take some of the worry out of it. :)

    Early Spring

No swallows, but I have seen a heron today, a kestrel, and six bumble bees in the garden all at the same time... Incredible for suburbs of Southampton.
