    Randy Oliver OA sponges

I’m trying to find something that can be hung between the frames to get it into the brood that the bees can walk over. Possibly the thin version of the sponger you are using. Any thoughts?

    Randy Oliver OA sponges

I think he may have done. Cut from RA website: Biodegradable cellulose matrices such as cardboard (chipboard), Swedish sponges, or cotton absorbent fabrics may be used. For full efficacy, roughly 55 – 60 square inches (365 cm2) of delivery matrix must be used if applied across the top bars, or...

Did you mix the Apobioxal according to the instructions as per trickling or a different concentration?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I have taken 4 supers off so far and they definitely have a spearmint taste

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Newbee questions. I’m really curious about this method. So, floor, clearer board then multiple supers? All a few metres from the original hive(s)? Does this work because once the foragers are done on the comb, they leave back to the original hive site? Clearer board to stop them re-entering...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

OK. Queen dispatched. New VQ introduced immediately in cage. Tab removed 24 hours later. Had a look 6 days later to check she had been released from the cage. All ok but there were about 20 queen cells over 2 frames. Does this mean they have killed the VQ or is it normal for this to happen and...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thanks. If the hive is still queen right, can I ‘off’ the old queen and introduce the virgin in a cage with the tab closed then a couple of days later, open the tab for the bees to chew our the candy. Would that work?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

In a cage or did you run directly onto the frame immediately after dispatching the old queen?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Is the process the same if adding a virgin queen. I have a very unpleasant hive which needs re-queening. I was under the impression, they needed to be made hopelessly queenless prior to introduction of the new queen. Thanks

    Newspaper or not

Thanks. I hate acronyms so apologies: hopelessly queenless

    Newspaper or not

Morning. When combining a HQL colony with a QR colony, is the tried and tested newspaper method ‘needed’? A colleague uses a ‘bit of Fabreze’ in each box then combines without newspaper. I assume the spray disrupts the pheromones/ causes confusion whilst they mix. Any thoughts?

Part capped super contaminated with sugar syrup

I’ve cocked up and fed with a super on and it’s fully loaded. Ideally, I’d like to clear this and get it back on a hive rather than freezing and storing the frames for later. I’d rather not spin the super out and re-feed. I wondered if there was another way. I have a NUC which would benefit...

    Advice on splitting please

I’ve read this previously and I think the question I’m getting to is about the presence of QC. The article seems clear that it’s too late to Demaree for swarm control once QC present and therefore a split is indicated. The OP was talking about a crowded colony with no QC. If there were QC...

    Advice on splitting please

Demaree rather than split board? Could you explain further please? Thanks. Paul

What does “I won’t be wearing a red carnation in my buttonhole!” mean?

We used to have a florist near our house called the buttonhole. Someone kept removing the ‘on’. As soon as the shopkeeper replaced it, it would happen again 😁

Beehut on agricultural land - planning consent?

Agree totally. Unfortunately, trying to have this conversation is proving very difficult with Guildford BC. Seems impossible to have a simple conversation to ask that question to someone who is qualified to give an answer. Tried this a few times before posting the question. They refer me to the...

Beehut on agricultural land - planning consent?

I got this from an ‘advice site’ 4. Livestock shelters are common to not have a planning permission Livestock shelters are commonly built without obtaining planning approval because they are considered outbuildings, which are frequently exempt from them. A conventional definition of an...
