    Smoker recommendations

£50 does not make it a cheap smoker. What is it about it that makes it so much better than a cheap ebay/thornes model??

honey at top ... academic reason why?

Structurally it would be wise for the bees to keep the weight closets to the point of connection. The wax cappings additionally adds strength to the structure If there is any problem with the stores they will know quickly and where from as honey will roll down the comb to the bees

    Wasps

Itchy have you spotted a gap, is this a service you are offering? Might need to put a hold on those parties in the sun in the back garden though. I think this has got to be the funniest concept I've heard in a long time. I wonder if he does trapouts as well, or does he rely on a wasp vac?

slow hive anything to worry about?

Honey is from capped stores We leave more than sufficient for them. Don't have time to sell jars of honey just use it ourselves and for gifts. We use the bees for work and pleasure (when we have the time) didn't realise they would be so addictive though.

slow hive anything to worry about?

Hope you don't mind me asking Finman Coming out of winter are you on 1, 1 1/2 or 2 brood boxes? When did you first start adding boxes? Did you say you only use deep boxes thru the hive or some of those 6 boxes mediums? Good point, I mentioned I had 18 frames of brood, should have said 18...

slow hive anything to worry about?

I can't dispute what you say, though I set the hives up for best opportunity. Always feed with honey or if necessary some Ambrosia syrup - usually for bees acquired during the summer. Sometimes however life offers additional challenges that need to be prioritised. Have 2 prolific hives (nasty...

What to do with stored pollen in removed lower super?

Finman - any thoughts on why that is? Does it go off in some way? You can buy pollen feed has that been treated in some special manor? If I was concerned about the loss of pollen I would have cut it out of the frame and added it - just as Cusswood mentioned - placing it up in a feeder would have...

slow hive anything to worry about?

This will be a brood box that you have added below?. What do you define as a strong hive Finman? Have you been moving your hives around to allow better foraging? Got to say my bees are not doing all that well (as of 2 weeks ago), though i have left them to just get on with it - only have one...

How best to clean a poly nuc - for the masses

Good news then So no need for the hot water- just a long cold soak in soda crystals followed by another in bleach in a plastic tub - thought there was meant to be more to it than that.

How best to clean a poly nuc - for the masses

Yep - I could not understand that, think its down to the username - this is an old one, and i can't remember the new one - or maybe I'm just hiding :) I can't really believe that by the time the steam gets out of the nozzle it is really superheated, think the idea is that it should be drier...

How best to clean a poly nuc - for the masses

So that would be the National Bee Unit Hive Cleaning and Sterilisation document. i appreciate you highlighting that document, there's also there Fact_Sheet_32_Plastic_Hives.pdf I don't mean to step on toes here and I may well be in a minority - though i doubt it, but non of the methods...

How best to clean a poly nuc - for the masses

I have a few poly nucs and they could all do with being cleaned and disinfected I have seen a post that is currently running but to be absolutely honest I found it to be a little over my head in that I am easily confused in any matters concerning Chemistry - I blame my PE teacher for this as...

Why fondant instead of syrup and vice versa?

That's interesting Finman - i thought I must just be a lazy lucky fool for not using fondant - we only use honey stores or for new nucs inverted syrup on our hives - if we see a deal on fondant we might pick some up to have ready at hand for use in the winter if things are not looking good - but...

Cut Out - What do I need

Looks like you were quite lucky there - not to big a colony. Had visions of you picking up timbrt after timber :) Where did you get stung? - on the forearms? Seems like the whole of the building could do with some mortar in the joints - would have been a tricky trapout

    Winter losses

Interesting poll shame there arent more details ie numbers of hives per answer. May be possible to change it in the 3rd year of doing it if %'s of 1 to 5 hive is the same

    Using queen excluders

I thought the queen moved down thru the hive leaving the layers above for honey storage; being that the case what is the point of a queen excluder unless its to retain the queen after hiving a swarm and its only useful if the queen is as thin as the rest at that point
