    Overwintering with double brood boxes

If they start to lay brood in it is what I meant by messing up. There is also a tendency for the colour to darken.

    Overwintering with double brood boxes

My guess is that it wouldn't, although I can see it providing a little more shelter for the cluster which can only be a good thing. As winter approached I used to leave a super on and move the excluder up one layer so the Queen & cluster had access to the brood box and the relatively full super...

Could be that is what they were referring to, thanks.

    Anybody recognise this beatle?

I corrected the typo for you there. Isn't off topic great, sorry to the OP btw.

    Overwintering with double brood boxes

That makes perfect sense to me, the impression I got was that some folds add a brood box just for the winter.

    Overwintering with double brood boxes

Maybe I'm not being clear. This was a theoretical question about something that I have heard that some folks do rather than something I'm planning on doing myself.

    Overwintering with double brood boxes

I've never done it myself but some do and I wondered what the theory was.

    Overwintering with double brood boxes

I have heard one or two folks saying that they overwinter with a double brood. So assuming you have a single deep brood with a couple of supers and you want to add the extra brood with drawn frames. Where do you put it ? On top or under the box with the Queen & brood. I'm thinking under but...

    Anybody recognise this beatle?

If only that was correct, there are 3 originals left, ever heard of Pete Best.

    Strike a Light !

If you want to be a purist then don't use matches. In fact using a smoker is for sissies.

    Happy Thanksgiving

I must inform you gents that a load of turkey and a couple of glasses of mead go very well together, off to lay down now :-)

    Beginners' own queens or not?

Mine does, and Jam, Pickled Veg, Eggs even Flowers all kind of things actually.

    Beginners' own queens or not?

On that basis keeping Bees is a complete waste of time. I can pop down to my local greengrocer and buy a jar of honey for £3.50 and it's 5 mins down the road.

    Strike a Light !

I have used something very similar to good effect but I found a can of lighter fuel and a cigarette lighter is my favorite.

    Bees ignoring the rule book!

Good result. Truth is, the day you know exactly what is happening in a hive, you will be very bored and dare I say, delusional :-)

    Beginners' own queens or not?

.........and your point is ? I'm probably a not voter. Seems like a specialization, almost a hobby in itself.
