    Paynes Poly

I haven't seen the pains poly yet so I can't compare, but I'm happy with their poly nucs.

    Paynes Poly

The actual opening isn't much larger than a conventional national.

The mouse guard also slides in horizontally, with entrance block.

    Paynes Poly

Yes the mesh floor is at the top of the ramp, and it is a very sturdy base. I have 2 very similar size colonies, one in poly and one in cedar. The poly bees are nowhere near as active as the cedar bees at the moment. I'm presuming it is because they are less affected by the temperature...

    Paynes Poly

The opening does look big, but as you can see from this photo the actual entrance is quite small. The slot at the top takes an entrance reducer which can also close the hive up for transport etc.

    Paynes Poly

I have a couple of the Beehive Supplies hives which are sitting along side a cedar national, I didn't vote in the poll so there are others out there. The joints are dovetailed and glued with contact adhesive, I painted them with masonry paint. I'm quite new to this beekeeping lark but I prefer...

    Apilifevar in poly hives?

I've just extracted my first honey from 2 poly hives and have already bought my apilifevar which I was planning to start next week. However I just read on the paynes website that it isn't suitable for poly hives, they say it will melt the polystyrene. Anybody had any experience of this?

    Honey Wine?

I've recently moved my bees to an out apiary which is very near a vineyard. Will bees forage from the vine?

    14x12 poly hive?

I'm using a couple of poly nationals from bee hive supplies, which I am happy with but couldn't compare them with other poly products. They produce a 14 x 12 brood box option.

    Out Apiary Rent

He doesn't grow crops, it is mainly meadows and the land is surrounded by well established gardens. I already rent one of his outbuildings as a workshop, so it would be very convenient for inspections etc.

    Out Apiary Rent

I've recently approached a friendly farmer who seems happy for me to place an out apiary on his land, we are going to look at potential locations next week. My question is, how much rent do people pay for their out apiaries?

    Poly warning.

Thanks PeterS for the wynne jones tip, had a look at their website and eventually found their poly hives. Looks like they are waiting for stock. I think I'll put off my hive decision until they are available.

    Poly warning.

RAB, It seems that most of your issues with this hive came from matching existing kit, a problem I don't have. I agree the jointing system doesn't look as good, but would only make construction a little trickier. Once glued it should be strong enough. The water ledge issue when using wooden...

    Poly warning.

Thanks for the info everyone, very interesting. The poly national from B**H*ve S*pplies looks good. Surely it makes more sense to match the internal measurements of the wooden version than the external, and they do a larger brood box which people seem to moving toward. Has anybody used one?

    Poly warning.

Hi Poly Hive, I'm new to this site and the world of beekeeping, I've joined my local bka and attending apiary meetings, reading books and looking in on this forum, but still can't decide on which hive to invest in. Almost definitely going down the poly route, and I thought my only decision was...
