    Agree with beejaybee but I only close entrance when wasps about, otherwise leave open all year. I have green woodpeckers around and found that it's usually when the ground is frozen that one in particular would have a go at a hive. Had problems with rats underneath nibbling the floors at one...

    There are a couple of threads on this just search STC 1000. Like others I find them ok with no need to use the cooling output.

    Mine is 19w X 25h X 16d (inches that is) It is an old upright freezer and takes 50sec to raise it by 1C, 4m 16 sec to drop by 0.1C. Control differential is set at 0.6C Actual Overshoot >1.3C , <0.2C I have the option to switch one heater off. Control is by a STC1000

    Hives that do not survive the winter often have plenty of stores, so I look inside and give fondant if required, directly above cluster.

    A beekeeping friend phoned me last summer whilst he was on holiday, a neighbour had phoned him to say his bees had swarmed into his front garden - could I go round! I did and even gave him back his bees. In a few weeks I'm off to Aussie for 6wks and he has volunteered to look after mine for me...

    Varroa help please!

    Put the varroa board in then you can count the drop, temp should not be a problem. Don't think it kills wax moth but others will soon correct me if I'm wrong.
