    Swienty Poly 14x12

14x12 is a good BB, I added a 2mm thick Aluminimum strip to the sidewall at the top of the hive to prevent Hoffman frames slipping past each other. Also added mouse guards as I had a vision of a mouse resting on the sloped landing ledge and chewing the 6mm slot a bit bigger.

    Worst bee-related job

Agree with Redwood, the best I have found is dry rotted wood. Place pieces in the smoker upright if possible as it leaves a bit of space for air to circulate. I have never tried the sawdust but I was using a big bag of T's wood chippings which worked OK but tended to block off the air...

Getting a head start in 2015?

Before buying anything - get a sting or two to see how your body reacts. That way if you have any major problems with bee stings you haven't shelved out a lot of money unnecessarily.

    End of season sales

Would that be… 1 - No rails for the frames so difficult to move once stuck down with propolis 2 - Floor can't be removed.

    Mouseguards

On my Swienty Poly hives I drilled two holes, one either side of the entrance on the poly floor, then glued in rawlplugs. I got small wooden drawer knobs and some "double ended" wood screws ( the type that have no head ). One end was screwed into the drawer knobs and the other is then inserted...

Big M Autumn Equipment Sale Cancelled

Thanks ITMA, Looks like B&Q will be getting a visit soon ;) Some of my hives are the Paynes poly so probably have to extend the clear twin wall all the way out to the sides to avoid any rain ingress with the less than perfect shallow depth poly roof :( As I have bottom bee space if I want to...

Big M Autumn Equipment Sale Cancelled

ITMA, When using the clear correx twin wall do you cut a hole in them for feeding fondant in the winter or do you just swap to other cover boards when feeding time comes around?

chances of a super being drawn or filed at this time of year ?

Fin, I have extracted 4 times this year already and had taken off the supers but the bees found ivy.

chances of a super being drawn or filed at this time of year ?

Put a super on a hive because there was an ivy flow on and bees had no room left in BB. The super which had new frames and foundation was drawn and filled in a week!

Not stocking Troway Hall/Medibee honey anymore - Looking for a new honey supplier.

Tombo, No matter what else you decide to do you should call her and hear what she has to say, if for no other reason than to satisfy your own curiosity as to why she is avoiding your business.

    Honey bees in decline

Chris, I think the main reason is that you live in a an area with plenty of forage. Here large parts of the UK that used to have bee friendly crops are now growing mono culture crops, plus most of the hedgerows are slashed to pieces by modern machinery on a regular basis.

    Best printer for labels.

Don't use a laser myself but I would think you can get something close to that size in clear labels.

    Best printer for labels.

Brother sounds OK. You can also get transparent labels so any design with black ink will look well against the honey in the jar. The only inkjet type I would consider buying is one that prints using pigment ink as dye based inks have no waterproofing.
