    1st Split Attempt

So here I am again after surviving the most daunting inspection I have ever done. It was mayhem as predicted and I found one of everything 😂. I'll try and make it as clear as possible. TONS of bees. See photo after opening up and shaking bees INTO the BB. Most frames had a nice amount of stores...

    1st Split Attempt

Wow! Thank you!! So I'm just waiting for the sun to come out and plan going in in the next couple of hours. I will take notes and photos to share. In terms of equipment, I have two hives with 2 supers each plus an empty poly nuc box. My plan is to keep two healthy hives ongoing. Don't really...

    1st Split Attempt

😂. Would love to but thunder and rain has just started so I need to equity until the morning I'm afraid. They won't swarm without a queen I guess so first job will be to look for a new queen virgin or otherwise. Do I then destroy all other queen cells? Do I cage the new queen so I can shake the...

    1st Split Attempt

I tried feeding them a couple of days ago and now done bees flying outside the nuc but haven't gone back to see if she's laying.

    1st Split Attempt

Queen is still there and moving around nicely but no laying as of a couple of days ago (5 days after the split).

    1st Split Attempt

That's what I tried to last Sunday. Queen plus two frames of capped brood plus stores plus bees in a separate hive and they seem to be fine.

    1st Split Attempt

Not yet. That was going to be my plan for today but stopped when I saw them out like that

    1st Split Attempt

That makes sense. Thanks. I was going to have a look today to destroy any new queen cells but freaked out when I saw them like that

    1st Split Attempt

I think so. Shook the bees off once I'd moved the queen and checked as well as I could

    1st Split Attempt

So while I'm having a look would it help to shake some bees in the queened nuc or perhaps put in a second super to give them more room?

    1st Split Attempt

Most of the ones on the face of the hive have gone back in and some are bearding and some fanning. Hope the couple of photos and video help

    1st Split Attempt

I was checking it once a week before I split them

    1st Split Attempt

It's 23 degrees and overcast here at the moment which is quite cool for this time of the year. Last couple of years they've swarmed exactly around May 5th - 10th...

    1st Split Attempt

Thanks for the quick response. Just so I know... What's the connection between bees fanning and the queen's mating flight? How can you tell? 😊

    1st Split Attempt

Looks like they are getting ready to swarm despite me splitting them. I think a virgin queen has emerged and they are off. Exactly the same day as last year and the year before. I knew that still didn't have enough space after splitting them and should have acted on it 🙁. Any advice. Like...

    1st Split Attempt

Sorry... Found the queen and she was quite active moving quickly across the frame just no evidence of her having laid anything.

    1st Split Attempt

I had a quick look at the nuc today, a week after splitting them and couldn't see any evidence the queen has begun laying in her new hive. Is this normal? Any advice welcome. Thanks

    Marking the queen

I had the same issue earlier in the year due to runny Posca pen paint but she's not shown signs of slowing down. Quite the opposite I think! Good Luck Roberto

Oh I'm in no rush. Just wanted to ensure the queen had enough bodies around her
