What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked all my hives, checkerboarded some between two broods, some had a few blanks moved into the broods, checkerboarded some with an extra brood empty distributed between three broods, put a super on some that I'm using as honey producer's. All hives absolutely going nuts getting nectar into...

New Apiaries - How Many Hives?

I'd put them at the most secure site unless you have a 4g camera

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Depends on a lot of factors but a strong hive can fill a super in a few days. During a heavy flow it's best to have multiple supers. The main thing that slows them down is not enough frames to get the water content low whilst still bringing more in. Also the hotter night and day temperature the...

    Bee Connected alert message

Same thing as what? It's totally the same thing. All you have to know is the ingredients and quantity and get them in the same capacity? Its the same as baking a cake you just need the right ingredients. The only difference is that I pay pence per hive you pay in pounds. It's not the same if you...

    Your liability to report varroa

Next we will have to subscribe to beebase at a hefty fee or report each and every hive, its location job lot

    Your liability to report varroa

So every hive in the UK needs to be reported? Hold on I have more important things to do. It's safe to assume every hive has varroa. Unless my gypsy spells really do work. Why don't they just say its mandatory for a beekeeper to register on beebase?

    Should bees eat crystallised honey

It's totally fine if bees didnt want it they wouldn't store it. It's all gone in my hives. I wish I had crystalised honey left because mine are on syrup and they are surrounded by potential nectar sourses literally on the doorstep

    Demaree swarmed

This is why I haven't tried it yet because I cannot afford to lose a strong hive at the moment. I don't trust it because everything I've tried so far suggests if you have one queen and a capped cell they can and will swarm. I'd like to know the thinking behind it and why I should use it above...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I think when the good weather hits we will have so much nectar our hives will get clogged so fast we have to split and only those with drawn frames will keep up

    Demaree swarmed

I've got to try that method. I'm going to try it next year. I'm curious as to why they don't swarm with a queen in the bottom and a cell in the top? All that separates is an excluder and super and empty brood. That would suggest to swarm the queen has to come into contact with a capped queen...

    Demaree swarmed

In my experience any hive left with more than one queen cell will swarm but saying that I just had a nuc with multiple cells the first emerged and stung the rest of the cells, but last year I had nucs with two cells swarm. Also this year I had a weak hive with multiple what I saw as supersedure...

    Double brood.

All I know is that I've managed to build up and keep quite a few hives from swarming this year, and if I look at all the posts from people who haven't managed that I must have got something right even though I have no mentor nor ever had one. I think I've done quite well

    Double brood.

Maybe I got the wrong impression but it seemed like you were all ganging up on me and takeing the mick. I don't claim to know everything or be an expert but I came on here to learn and hopefully help

    Double brood.

I said I was splitting my hives and by that I mean the ones that need splitting not all of them. But if I hadn't checked I wouldnt have a plan to begin with even if it is poorly thought out nonsense. But I'll have splits with queen cells ready to hatch and new colonies, and my hives that were...

    Double brood.

I don't consider lifting a brood box stressful or knocking down queen cups, plenty of beekeepers lift brood boxes to check a hive, If more new beekeepers checked hives more often maybe so many wouldn't lose them to swarming. The time will come when I don't have the time to check so often but I...
