High amount of propolis suddenly? Anyone the same?

Another one with a yes. I'd be interested if anyone has an explanation. As this is our first full year I haven't seen it before, does it always happen at this time of year (ish)? Simon

    ankle biters

I also tuck my gloves (let's not go there gloves yes or no) inside my sleeves, same reason, seems logical to me. I used to be stung through the gauntlet "folds". Not since I tucked them under the suit. Simon

    ankle biters

:iagree: I don't understand why anyone tries the otherway, bees can't get in to sting, job done. Simon

    Balsam starting to flower

In it's native land there are lots of natural controls, various beatles, catapillars and diseases that keep it under control. It causes no where near the damage there that it does here due to the lack of natural controls. See http://bit.ly/Lu26zC for a video of scientists researching for...

I think you've just got the 'invasive' bit of the problem!

    Alien grub

Just a note of thanks to ITLD - I learn much on this forum, but rarely something I've never come across, usually adding to the sum of knowledge. Never heard of this - and even though it's common to a guy in ITLD's line of work - it was put across easily and with lot's of useful 'extra' info...

    Balsam starting to flower

Well according to the guidance, "the wild" is “The diverse range of natural and semi-natural habitats and their associated wild native flora and fauna in the rural and urban environments in general. This can also be broadly described as the general open environment.” You can grow it in your...

    Balsam starting to flower

Hi We can't have our cake and expect to eat honey. If we object to environmental damage that (potentially) harms bees - insecticides, herbicides, reducing 'weeds' that provide pollen (OK not everyone does object, but I certainly do) then the beneficial alien species should also be objected to...

    extinct honey bees

Pedant warning - with no apology, this really annoys me...... Extinction of a particular animal or plant species occurs when there are no more individuals of that species alive anywhere in the world - the species has died out - Full stop! Simon

    Warnig starvation!

Agree! Came home early, as good weather, to do a decent inspection. 9 days ago three frames of stores. Today two half frames. All the capped stores round the brood frames being emptied. Fed 1 litre 1:1 and will top up unless weather stays good. Still brood on 6 frames though so. Simon

    Range of reactions to stings

Sorry, no, but if offered enough wine then I'm sure they could be persuaded to re-enact it!

    Range of reactions to stings

Straying but..... A friend, and not a beek, tells me of when his wife got stung by a bee. Having dinner in a posh hotel, sat outside on the terrace. Bee stings wife on the breast, through the blouse, just next to the important part of said organ….. Not knowing what to do they run to the loos...

    feeding?? supering??

Yes, clear crown board, but they're real sluggish and contracting, hence the feed.

    feeding?? supering??

Haven't been able to inspect for three weeks, just too damn cold. Have started giving 1:1 at least until we can have a look. Three weeks ago they were down to two frames of stores, and I guess they're getting cabin fever, haven't really seen them since (except through clear crown, they are...

How late after the swarms arrives can the hive location be moved?

Hi Sorry if I was unclear Rab, I fully understand the three mile, three feet rule for established hives. This question is about swarms. People are hinting at a window of opportunity, when the bees are busy drawing comb, getting used to their new home, when you can move them more than 3 feet...

How late after the swarms arrives can the hive location be moved?

I'm with fiftyjon, really useful question. As a newbeek I'm not sure what the rules are! I've variously read you have a few days and do it ASAP. Of course we would all move them ASAP if we could, but I guess the question is how long can it be left. If for example I'm away for a weekend and a...

National Bee Unit and Asian Hornets

If you have had asian hornets they would like to know, as far as I know there have been no confirmed records in the UK. There is an ID sheet available at https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/nonnativespecies/downloadDocument.cfm?id=646 Please send details to [email protected] If you...

Different colour bees in the same hive.

Maybe I am wrong, but not in the way Silly Bee thinks! In fact, on further reading, it appears that some drones also can have fathers. A gene called the CSD gene controls sex in a bee and a fertilized cell can have two CSD genes which makes them male, although they tend to be killed at larvae...
