Autumn mistake and learning from them.

Months later (the following Spring after Autumn treatment) if you're referring to the oft misquoted NZ study ... and I'm not sure it was vaporisation.

Autumn mistake and learning from them.

Alternatively .... to avoid having all sorts of screws or hooks sticking out of your floors so things cannot be stacked together or whatever ... drill a 6mm hole through the side of the floor and attach a 6mm bolt to a strong piece of polypropylene 'string' attached to the luggage scale. Slot...

    Poly roofs

I've got several black Correx roofs entering their 5th season. Must either be differences in the quality or colour ... I've noticed that some of my white Correx Varroa trays are starting to get brittle, but the black stuff seems more resistant. None of mine is actually real Correx, just a...

    Poly roofs

Insulated crown board and £2 Correx roof ... probably cheaper still

    Multipurpose Board

My Correx split boards have all deformed when in use. They bow if they're used for a long period - usually with the bees building brace comb over the top bars of the lower box. Mine are 4mm Correx, but look very like your pic. They might be OK as crown boards ... but I'd be wanting to test them...

    Small Hive Beetle "confirmed outbreak"?

Four sentinel nucs in Calabria were positive up to November. One positive hive. Map here. I think the dates on the map are wrong - here's the tabulated data for sentinel nucs.

Colony died off - honey still safe to eat?

Using the commercial kits it's also an expensive test to do. It's clear - from this thread alone, and dozens of others here and on Beesource - that a) not everyone does 'know', and b) since the widespread use of sublimation by some beekeepers has made OA treatment at times other than midwinter...

Colony died off - honey still safe to eat?

This reference is quoted time and time again (I think it was from a NZ study if I recollect) .... it refers to dribbling in autumn and testing again in the following Spring. Is there any data showing OA levels the day, week or month after sublimation or trickling? This is what's being...

Colony died off - honey still safe to eat?

Or just treat with acetic acid to kill the Nosema and use for the bees.

Colony died off - honey still safe to eat?

Why risk it? Beefriendly is correct, but I wouldn't do it, even for my own consumption. Feed it back to the bees. The instructions to not treat when honey supers are present, or not to harvest honey during treatment are there for a reason. I'd not want to argue on some technicality that it was...

    Pimp my Poly

My English regularly lets me down ... and it's my first language ;)

    Pimp my Poly

Hello Mellifera Crofter ... I thought the usual word preceding 'preen' in this context would be 'primp'? Certainly there's a load of beauty salon-type places online which seem to have this as a name. Anyone who knows me would be aware I have no direct knowledge or experience of that ;) From the...

Can you leave made up frames outside in freezing temps?

I'll print that picture out and use it as 'exhibit A' when any comments are made about my 'bee stuff' encroaching on what others call normal family life. Or is it the first bee shed with a chandelier?

    Reusable woodpecker proofing

Damp proof membrane pinned on to the hives. Stops woody getting a grip. Roll it up and store until the next season.

    Vaping Intervals

Correx 5 sheets 4mm 8'x4' black or white delivered for about £50 from eBay. Too many for one person, but a useful group purchase.

paynes eke for a nuc (to hold fondant/top down vaping)

I did this back in 2014 ... no dimensions I'm afraid. Just eyeball it. Measure twice, cut once, swear often. They worked well.

Severe Honey Bee Losses Correlate with...

This reminds me of the 'sunspots and influenza' story ... Original Hope-Simpson letter to Nature here, but lots of follow up ... https://www.nature.com/articles/275086a0 Pretty thoroughly debunked...

    Planting trees

To avoid any confusion (just in case PETA read these pages) ... you are not allowed to use a crossbow for hunting in the UK. Only for target shooting on private land ... Which reminds me of the great Gary Larson cartoon ...

    Planting trees

I'd like to but there are too many d@mn red deer. I'm in the process of trial seeding a couple of cleared areas which are hard to reach and if that's successful will seed more extensively. I may have to invest in lots of fencing ... or a crossbow ;)

    Planting trees

We've got a bit of rowan already but, you're right, it should have been on the list. I also should have stressed wild cherry for precisely the reason Newbeebeekeeper mentions.
