Mixing Soft Set - Spiral or “Propeller”?

I use a long wooded spoon, works well for me and never get a problem with frosting or fermenting.

    Creating Soft-Set Honey

Buy sufficient reputable soft set (not cheap supermarket stuff) and apply at least to a rate of10% to your own stored extracted honey. (remember to save some for making your own future soft set honey).

    Swarm under OMF

Not inspected the nuc yet. I’ll post when I have. There was a small amount of comb under the nuc with some honey.

    Swarm under OMF

Found what looks like a swarm under the OMF. The Q in the hive was clipped and I assumed they had tried to swarm but the Q didn’t make it and the swarm ended up below the OMF. Yet on checking the hive, she was in there… could she have crawled back in or is it another hives swarm… seems a bit of...

Adding a Queen to an apedia

I’m thinking of adding a virgin Queen (from my incubator) to a queenless apedia (last one died in release cage) by spraying air freshener at the time of release. Anyone tried it… could it work?

    SN4’s

Big price differences for unassembled (National) SN4’s. Bee equipment £16.10 (first grade) for ten frames & foundation, Abelo £20.80 (premium), Simon Beekeeper £15.50. Couldn’t find comparable for Thornes. Any recommendations based on price & quality?

    Supering Dilemma - Lothian

Useful postings, as a result I delayed my plan of putting supers on today. One exception was a heavy one with the eke filled with comb…containing larvae. Decided the BB must be full of stores and Q has limited space to lay. Placed the super above the BB with a QE. Didn’t inspect, too cold with...

What would you do... no brood?

Inspected two hives yesterday, one with 5 frames of brood and the other with none but both fairly strong? Saw both queens. I disposed of the non laying queen and merged the two hives (with air freshener). Hives adjacent to OSR and located in East Yorks. Was I premature.... would you at this...

    Top opening on a demaree?

Is the top opening arrangement only preferred when wanting a vertical split with a new Q (so she can get mated) or is it useful anyway as a top opening allowing drones out and quicker bee access to the top supers?

    Remaining syrup in the BB

Most of my hives are a good weight with fondant added as a back up… just in case! I can removed any remaining fondant in the spring, but what about any remaining syrup… is there a chance the bees could move it up into the super(s)? Not thought about it before.

    Demaree Questions

Do most using the demaree method provide an upper entrance to the top BB? Does it make any difference which way it points?

Do most people use mouse guards or not?

I often get mouse droppings on the varroa board! But this year I have not used mouse guards and no apparent problems yet seen.

    What’s this plant

Maybe, but thinking back I did have some cornflower seeds so more likely than scabious... I think!

    Bees chucking out brood?

I’ve used Abelo OA strips in all my hives last autumn with a January vape. Looking good so far with virtually no varroa evident. Was uncertain about the OA strips (much cheaper than Apivar).

    What’s this plant

I planted these as seeds last year but can’t remember what they are! Any ideas pls?

    Cleaning bee suit

I tie a carrier bag tightly around the hood and chuck in the washer... works for me and avoids rezipping the hood back on.
