    Beehaus ventilation question

Thanks all... I am going to keep the beehaus for now and also a 14x12 national...that way I don't need 2 types of frame etc. I will keep the other end of the beehaus for swarm control. Polyanwood you're right they are not the gentlest.. Not aggressive or angry, just lively although the scene...

    Beehaus ventilation question

Hi all Not that happy with the amount of bees on the varandah at night...also loads of fanning in the morning when the sun is on the hive... All pretty normal I know..but when I inspected on Saturday, they poured out the top almost like they were gasping! There's no top ventilation at all...

    Artificial swarm

Hi all been working abroad so not had much time to post... All going well with the beehaus but not a fan in the end- despite my bravado at the start, 2.5 year on and now I know more, it really isnt that good. I have a strap between the legs to stop them splaying (this is a free replacement from...

Will my bees swarm if i over feed them fo winter?

Hi Adam, Im a newbee too - in my second year and I had the very same thought re swarming a couple of weeks ago.. even looked through my books to see what I could find out on the topic of overfeeding and swarming this time of year. One quick call to my mentor put me right. You may find the odd...

Help... How do I stop robbing?

Odd robbing situation my colony swarmed in July - didn't manage to get them back, they went off into the nearby moors never to be seen again. Recently I've noticed some fighting at the hive entrance, bees being 'sussed out' on the landing board by others, then pushed to the ground where a...

    Play cups and other stuff

Hi all Did an inspection today. Total mite count after 2 weeks =100. Have fed a bit over the past couple of weeks also.. They seemed light at the time. Plenty of brood mostly capped and some larvae.. Lots of stores now as you would expect so removed feed. But saw a few empty play cups...

    The Final Frame!

Hi. No you're right.. One way street with a beehaus. I'm going to try calming myself down as the fix.. It is probably me as they don't sting. its more of a "clear off... We have given you 10 minutes" my mentor was with me a few weeks ago and she commentedhow calm they were (they are a swarm we...

    The Final Frame!

Thanks all. I agree with the nervous thing.. because now I know what's going to happen, I automatically feel my heart rate increase..! I agree it is probably the guards being disturbed. BTW last frame (ie first, nearest entrance) had plenty of brood yesterday. Oh, and doing an inspection...

    The Final Frame!

Hi all, a quick question/observation. my bees are calm when I inspect, just one or two curious ones buzz around... until the last frame. It normally takes about 10/15 minutes for me to get to the last frame (the one nearest the entrance) and, like clockwork, they start to go a bit crazy - not...

    A big day

I reckon that little jar has cost me many (many) hundreds. But worth every penny in what I have learned about wildlife and about myself along the way. Well, that's what I'm telling myself anyway. :blush5:;);)

    A big day

Today was, most probably, one of the best days of my life... Second year of beekeeping and have had one 'learning experience' after another...resigning myself to the fact that year 2 would not yield any honey. Swarms, queen less twice, new queen killed, the list is endless... Today i decided...

    Things I learned today...

    1) a hived swarm can swarm again 7 weeks after hiving 2) always shake or brush bees off frames so you can spot qc's 3) a swarm (mentioned above) doesn't always stay in the skep. They can fly off again 3 times. Before finally heading off in the sunset. Of course on a 30 degree day... 4) stock up...

Winter, wind and the mesh floor

My apologies this time Mike, not been looking at the board for a few days. You are absolutely right.. when I looked 1 week after moving the frames to the centre; they had built lots of comb from the front wall to the newly placed dummy board! I decided to leave it and in March have a clear out...
