    Free swarms

Thanks for the PMs, If I get another swarm I'll phone around to see who's available. If I get several I'll make sure that they're shared out.

    Free swarms

I collect swarms in the local area and I'm just about out of capacity to house them so if anyone needs to make up their stocks in the NW Kent area and are happy to collect let me know. No guarantee that there will be more but just when I thought it was tailing off had to pick up another prime...

    Sussex killer bees?

This looks like them to me - if so then non-aggressive. Collected (complete with bird box) from resident's garden.

Putting frames into brood box with no foundation???

I stopped using foundation in the brood and supers last year with excellent results. I always use a starter strip though and always ensure that the hive is level. Check out http://www.bushfarms.com/beesfoundationless.htm for guidance.

    And he's proud of himself

re Had a call out today to a lady with a 'swarm' in her first floor bathroom vent. She's already had a pest controller out to have a look, apparently he confirmed they were bees but he too declined the job as 'they are a protected species'. So seems that it's a fairly standard response. Will...

    And he's proud of himself

Interesting what you say about pest controllers killing the bees and blocking up the holes. That implies that the stores are left? Doesn't that leave the pest controller with liability for any damage that comes from any decay of the stores? I've just been to a swarm call out today - in fact it...

    And he's proud of himself

Re Cavity walls - a solution to this one has vexed me also. As I see it there are two issues - firstly getting rid of the bees and secondly, getting rid of the comb/stores. The most straightforward and I suspect appropriate solution is removing the masonry and then carrying out a standard colony...

    bee hive design

The article states . . "He said there appeared to be a coating to protect the sandstone from the insects, which can damage masonry." - I can imagine them propalising the stone - any ideas on how they would damage it??

    Land Rovers...

I've had a 110 for over eighteen years - and brought it secondhand then so it's about 25 years old now. Pre TDi so re-engined it with a decent Nissan engine. Never looked back. Only thing that tends to rot on them is the chassis - though that's easily welded - check it carefully before buying...

    Woody Woodpecker

Had a woodpecker problem for the first time this year - wrapped the hives in builders polythene (damp proof membrane is ideal) and they now ignore them. Cheaper and easier than chicken wire and convenient to store for another year.
