Yes we do in Eastbourne. There is a school called St Bedes and it is from 13 to 18 years and we have an Apiary there, the experienced beeks have been teaching one of the science masters about beekeeping, so there is one hive that he looks after with the students. The other three hives are...

feeding in February and bees collecting water

I went to a question and answer meeting at our local association on Tuesday. The chair who has 25 years experience suggested that we all start to feed the bees because down here in the south east they are getting very busy and will be using up their stores very quickly. A 1:1 syrup was...

    Honey uncappers

At one of our groups' meetings last September we were working on 'how to harvest your honey'. We were shown how to use a hot air gun with a long thin attachment to uncap the honey. The hot air is gently run down the cells and it simply shrinks back the cappings and leaves no residue -...

What are your bees foraging on?

I am still compiling my list of plants that honey bees use according to the month. I have also been researching the differences between the bumble bees' and honey bees mouth parts because some plants are used by both but others are only used by bumble bees. The seed distributors do not seem to...

    plywood hives

I bought a brood box in ply from them and it was very difficult to put together, poor design and I will not buy again. Check out Caddon hives in Scotland I just bought some cedar boxes from them only a few quid more than the ply and they are really great! Best Louise PS I am not on a commision! ha!

    Caddon hives

Hi RAB Don't understand glued board construction, is that like plywood? These are solid wood pieces with the cut joints at the edge that fit perfectly. Have just treated them with the special clear cuprinol (I know this isn't necessary) but the wood looks great now. I have a few plywood...

    Caddon hives

These were nationals, very smooth wood and lovely quality. The roof had the wood at the top covered with the metal not like the other one which is just chipboard covered with the metal.
