Insulating for a low consumption hive - review of book by Jean Riondet (La Ruche Basse Consommation D'Energie)

You can watch the YouTube video with English sub-titles using auto-translate. It does a pretty good job. It fails with 'Couvin' which I think is brood nest and 'smages', . . . bit of a guess, swarm. ? I have watched some videos from "Une Saison Aux Abeilles" and the auto-translate is not as...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That sounds odd. You're now into our June so you must have had a good look at them by now. And split them! ? I read very early drones as a failing queen or an unmated late supercedure. Thinks! Maybe you have both. Good luck with them. You're at the right end of the year to sort them out. . . ...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I could go in and check. . . . Oh!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I had one a few years ago where I saw drones flying on warm days overwinter. They limped on into April with the queen laying some worker brood and the beekeeper hoping they would supercede. At worst they can look after the comb until spring and we'll find out. Paid actual money for this queen...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I hope I'm wrong. Varroa lower right for scale. Thin, biscuit coloured, dome shape. I cleared the slide at the beginning of the month to do a drop count. Last went in 24 days ago, saw marked queen. ?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Drone cappings dropping out of one of my colonies. In November, not encouraging.
  7. Parsonage Bees

    Are you still inspecting? November?

Looking at responses above I could be guilty of over-inspection and messing them about. Inspections about once every 2 weeks since end August. My last inspection of the year was 2 weeks ago, mid-October. That was just a heft of their super and 2-3 frames in the BB. (brood and a half) Since end...

    High varroa count post-treatment

Too scared (and too cheap) to use OAV. Used ApiVar on them in April. Could use again but you're supposed to rotate treatments, right? I can afford to loose them so will test my idea that they are tough enough to survive some neglect.
  9. Parsonage Bees

    High varroa count post-treatment

Counted varroa drop over 3 days. 3 colonies - 2-4v/day but . . . . . . 2 colonies - 20v/day (incl. biggest, most productive colony) Used Apiguard over September - mid-October Some say drop isn't accurate but it's an indication at least. Not doing a mite wash at this time of year. Thinking I'll...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Last inspection. Variable, only one BIAS and a couple just capped brood. Found 2 queens. Removed ApiGuard #2. Wish them well.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just wandered around to the hives and this colony is doing it again. The recipient of all the attention eventually dropped into the grass. Picked her up and she's not moving much but not black and shiney, and wings look OK. Tongue sticking out. Sick in some way, maybe we can't see. Or as you...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Think there has been some fighting as dead bees in the grass in front. Now there's furious cleaning. Don't think it's wasps. Only the odd one around. Hive in almost the same position as another hive as they are shuffled along the stand, 3ft at a time. Looking down the front of the hive.

    Better Strap the Hives Down….

A mere breeze here at 568mph in Lincolnshire but strangely the house is still standing. ? #update 11:57 The lovely Carol Kirkwood just apologized for problems on the weather app before doing forecast on BBC News. Phew!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Looks like a Norwegian Blue. It has expired. It has ceased to bee. #edit - sorry I'll go and do some beekeeping
  15. Parsonage Bees

    High varroa count post-treatment

But then I remember this. I saved this from a research paper. Sorry to the author I've lost the link. I remember they handled thousands of bees repeatably, individually checking for mites. Remarkable determination. Not sure of the detail but think they found 14.6% infestation but 59.9% of the...

    High varroa count post-treatment

Already too late for the early winter bees. OAD now? Can't do it again in December. I see the attraction of vaping. One thought is, "they are dead already", unless you do something. But is it going to kill the colony. 89-87% NOT carrying a mite? (but viruses, etc. ) They may be weak into next...

    High varroa count post-treatment

The couple of times I've used ApiLife Var I've had to re-treat. The second time I tried it was because it was recommended by an academic in the USA on a YouTube video, so I thought I'd give it another try. I don't think it knocks down enough mites to be effective. (following my sample of 2 x 4...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checking amount of stores and presence of brood. Don't want to find QCs. Removed. Failed late supercedure seen 3 weeks ago. Can't find her today. Rustling. Unite with another colony once I've cleared them out of the super. (thinking could have done both today but at least weather tomorrow looks OK).
