Asian hornet traps and baits - please review what you've used

Found a queen wasp in the house yesterday, not very energetic, loitering on a door frame.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Monthly weigh-in. Approx. 4lb drop during January across 4 hives. Clear floor trays to do varroa drop count. Cappings drop show 3, 4 or 5 seams. . . . Ben

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I've put polystyrene sheet between the correx filling the empty frame and used them on either side of the box overwinter. Think they give more insulation than a part-drawn or empty brood frame. ? #edit You need a strip of correx along the bottom to stop them chewing out the polystyrene.

    Thickness of homemade foundation

I can't imagine you've cast foundation that is more than 1 - 1.5 mm thick. ? Some of mine is that thick and the bees don't seem to mind. Some is 'lacey' (?) with holes but they fill them in. Experiment with the temperature of the molten wax. Yes, the homemade sheets are heavier than bought-in...

Hive Monitoring - Surprising winter data

Soon after I started beekeeping I've wanted one of these sensors, wanting to know what's going on in there. Maybe they just create more questions. The internal humidity goes up not long after the temperature drops. Nectar coming in and water content reduced, cluster moves down away from the...

    "Wasp" found in imported vehicle

Watched a YouTube video earlier of this guy renovating a neglected Ferrari (I can dream). He released a 'wasp' from one of the lights. Car had been imported from Japan. I added a comment with a link to the BBKA AH page suggesting that anyone importing vehicles from abroad should not just...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

"You never can tell with bees" . . . Or beekeepers. #edit If you need some help with bee withdrawal symptoms, a link to the movie clip.

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

Bought-in queen survives and I can requeen some of my defensive mongrels with her offspring. Hives seem to have been grumpy most of the year which has put me off doing much practice in handling drones and queens. Mark queens competently. (same as last year) Be more ruthless swapping out old...

    Warming cabinet heater

Solway Feeders have these incubator heating elements on sale again. They were on sale when I bought one. Not sure what the story is there. Wanted another one a while ago and they didn't sell them. Can't remember which wattage :D. Go for the big one. Used these insulators to support it off the...

    Sold Lincolnshire honey for sale

! Hi Jamie, that's a surprise. Yes I have at least one 30lb tub left. Maybe 2. The second one I think is 19% water and I was unsure whether it might ferment. It is set. Not such a good harvest this year. I've already sold 3 x 30lb tubs to a local guy. Let me know. Thanks. . . . . Ben

    Hive weight and stores..

The only weight that matters is the weight drop. They've eaten 4kg (9lb) in 8 weeks. (Ignoring the weight of the bees and brood which is also slowly dropping.) Some of mine hardly loose any weight at this part of the year. Others 4-6lb. Big colonies will eat more. On last inspection, how many...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Well I was standing next to one of my hives and the sky was doing this earlier. Nacreous clouds. Amazing. Lasted about 20 minutes before the sun dropped lower and the regular clouds rolled in.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked on my weakest colony which I thought was dead. No activity when others where flying. Very much alive. Bottom bee space super on top of a top bee space brood so worried cluster won't be able to move up. Inserted foam with holes so that queen doesn't get left behind as they move up.

    Polystyrene v Cedar

:laughing-smiley-014 "Well they would say that wouldn't they?" I find myself using this sentence as a defense against this sort of green-washing. 'depending on [sic] cleanliness' Covered in propolis? I've been struggling to get propolis out of the vinyl floor in my kitchen where I do...

    Polystyrene v Cedar

Bee boxes are one of the few choices you have NOT to create more plastic in the environment. I wonder how many plastic bags are equivalent to a brood box.
