both of my colonies may be queenless

If one are going into a hive doing an inspection then one has to have an objective. Checking on brood on a warm day in November does not seem to me like a good objective. My last inspections were in September and my next will probably be in April and that is probably the same for a lot of...

    Unconventional/experimental hives.

As long as I don't get flamed, but I was desperate at the time. I also had no where to put it so ended up siting it on two patio chairs. Sometimes you have to improvise. The entrance is the similar to the Dartington, but does not have the depth from the front of the Dartington entrance. It...

    Unconventional/experimental hives.

I made an emergency hive to house a late swarm from pieces of Kingspan insulation gluing them together. I made up a floor out of wood and mesh I had. The crownboard is a piece of 12mm ply. Another piece of kingspan on top and used some aluminum sheet for a roof cover. I cut the shape to take...

    distorted wings:-( very sad

Sorry to see that Dick and Doris. I am lucky so far and not seen any of my bees like this. Whilst you put them out of their misery, does anyone else known if having bees in the hive with deformed wings is totally a disaster? If they are in the hive and perform housekeeping then at least they...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Added a bit more thymolised syrup to a few hive whilst weather so good (and forecast 14 degrees and sun tomorrow). Other hives I insulated and watched. Still loads of Ivy pollen coming in. Next weekend I will take off all feeders and insulate. Next intervention after that OA and fondant.

    hive debris

Thanks for psoting this SuziQ, I have learned a bit more seeing this. What should be done? It is late in the season so do they get left and then deal with the damage in spring? SuziQ do you leave the monitoring board in all the time?

    Bee Craft Distribution?

I did spot it. I love the Firefly series as well.

    Bee Craft Distribution?

Serenity, best film, ever. Beautiful script with so many funny lines, ("batteries", and "give him an hour" are two classics)

    Double Brood??

I watched a video where there were double BB and they only inspected the top box. The suggestion there was that any swarm cells would only be on the bottom the the top BB frames, "never" (dare I say never?) any in the lower box. Also they left one frame in the bottom brood box with no...

    Afixing a mouse guard

I use the wooden block as a mouse guard by modifying it; Panel pins knocked in every 8mm. Less pollen seems to be lost compared to the punched hole guards. If using the metal mouse guard then no entrance block should be in.

    syrup poored into frames

All of my posts are my opinion and I don't profess them to be science fact. I take everyone's posts as an opinion and make my own judgement.

    syrup poored into frames

I think most of it will run right through and end up on floor. You may have read that 'if the bees are not taking the syrup then you can trickle some in and it gives them a big hint there is syrup above'. I did this where hive was suffering from nosema and they were not taking much syrup down...

    Number of supers over winter

I would be tempted to take two supers off and extract assuming they are capped. The third super I would move down below the brood box. No QE on. The bees will use the honey if needed and warm enough and it gives a bit more draft proofing during winter. I would not leave supers on top...

    Mice

I am new to Poly Nucs, I got two 6 frame nationals from Paynes. How would they be mouse guarded? I was thinking of getting a redundant punched metal mouse guard, cutting it down, bending to shape then somehow(I have not thought this one through yet) fastening it over the entrance.

    Beehive - University design project.

Good luck with this. My thought would be that a good starting point may be 'what do beekeepers have to make over a standard hive?' One example is winter insulation where people use a variety of different things and change them to suit, like cutting out sections for fondant. Feeding is another...

    Ivy and HB

It is about two weeks since any HB came in. Ivy coming in now but on a walk yesterday there are still a lot of ivy flowers still only in bud so we should have that for a while longer. It was warm yesterday and there was a load a activity still. They still have room for syrup as well.

Please can you tell me which fondant it is on the BAKO site? Thanks

Help with Research into Bees (and Humans!)

I answered 'no', but then stated why I said no. The word 'relationship' I felt was bit difficult to pin down. Did it mean "the bees get to know you and so are OK with you, in the folk lore type way" but then again I open up the hive and try and understand what is going on so in that sense...

anyone ever skiied in soll in Austria???

In 1991 my wife and I had a week of our honeymoon at Soll, the second week we were in Kirschberg. Really enjoyed it. Late February and in places the snow was patchy but as you know it can be like that. The Apres ski was fantastic. But that was a long time ago, but I bet it hasn't chnaged...
