Greece http://www.businessinsider.com/greece-germany-pensions-2010-4 If it is going to be increasingly more exprensive to go on holiday to Greece, perhaps they may turn to beekeeping instead.

I hate it when someone says

I may not be 'lol' but I am chuckling - I had no idea that you all had such a sense of humour. "I've just seen your Queen bee, quick, quick, come and see" "Hmm, are you sure its a Queen honey bee?" "Oh yes! It's definately a Queen, it's big and fat and huge. Quick before she flies off"...

Bee behaviour I;ve not seen before

I agree - they are just 'chilling out' on the veranda wondering what 'that big white' thing is going to do next

    Oh dear! Poorly mated Queen?

Hello Busybee123 I am in a similar situation with one of my hives with possible drone laying Q. I can't find her so she could be a drone laying worker. Have you managed to solve your problem hive? Did you re-unite? What did you do? I too, am worried about the queen in my 'good' colony...

    wasps entering one hive Help

Has anyone got a photo of one of these mesh/tube/entrance-reducer thing-a-ma-bobs? All I can understand of the explanations is the entrance is blocked and the only way in/out is through a rammed in plastic hair curler that's poking out ...

Wasp traps - how far away?

Thanks for your replies - I will try both. I just did not want to attract even more wasps to the hives. I guess it's which one smells the strongest.

Wasp traps - how far away?

Does anyone have any advice as to how far away from a hive wasp traps should be situated? Does it make any difference as to how high/low they should be? I would not want to put a trap too near a hive as it could attract wasps to the hive, rather than the trap. There again, not too far away so...

High level of wasp activity . . .

I tried a few wasp baits last year. I made up several different traps each with different sugary variations in them - jam, marmalade, vinegar, blackcurrent juice, orange cordial, and finally pure orange juice. The one which got the most wasps was the pure orange juice with double and more the...

How many queen cells do you leave and why?

I left one once - it was perfect too. Fat and plump, well sealed all the way round. No evidence of being re-sealed. In the middle of the frame too. I waited, and waited. Two weeks later I was still waiting. Nothing happened. I thought perhaps the cold weather was natures way of delaying...

lemon grass oil as swarm lure?

Thank you Sputnam - good tips. I will have a look and see if there are any old frames not being used in one of my hives.

lemon grass oil as swarm lure?

Has anyone used lemon grass oil as a successful swarm lure? Someone asked the same question last year, but I cannot find any results, or if it attracted any swarms. I've just bought some lemon grass pure essential oil for £3.29 from the local health food shop and am thinking of trying it out...

    Weather

Lancashire - Central heating has been on and off for weeks now - even lit the log fire last night. And, Oh my - have you seen the weather forecast for next week? Brrrr Bees are taking all their stores. Guess there is not much chance of any honey this year. Perhaps when the balsam comes....

Good idea - possibly sell next spring - hope the winter will not be as bad as the last one. I will see what interest there is.

How much are nucs going for now?

Thanks Ed, I thought perhaps about that. The Garden Centre near me is holding a Bee Keeping week end course in a couple of weeks, perhaps someone may be interested...

Unbeleavable what some people can do....

Is it possible that the hive etc may have been stolen? The person who sold it to him sounds untrustworthy.
