What did you do in the Apiary today?

The first day of the year wearing shorts, it was glorious. A full round of inspections done, the orchard splits that I treated earlier in the week are much improved as I didn't see any varroa. Three of four of the splits have the white dot queen but the fourth was nowhere to be found, instead...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Nice evening so promoted a nuc to a hive, fed a few splits. Headed down to the Orchard and treated the heavy varroa splits and gave them a feed. Hives were humming along nicely.

    Smoker

It has a firebox that you can remove and light outside the smoker or light it in situ. Other nice thing is the bottom of it remains cool so you can set them on poly hives without doing damage. I thought someone had posted this video earlier in the thread:

    Smoker

Almost what I do with my Rauchboy. I add a bit of straw to get things started. I use a Rothenberger Superfire 2 torch to get a good fire going then the cat litter pellets goes on top. My problem used to be that the smoker always went out before my rounds now it stays lit for a long time after I...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Just doing little projects to justify my 3d printer. Made a wiring jig; a bit lighter duty than I'd like but I haven't got any thicker ply so for v1 I'm happy, wires definitely more taut. Also made my own crown of thornes, hopefully, easier found than the boring brown Thornes sell although...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Visited the Orchard Apiary, split a hive from hell last week that had swarmed (bad weather); had to wash my suit after as it was covered in stings. This week much better however two of the split nucs have a heavy varroa load, I saw quite a few drones with varroa and an odd worker so need to...

What colour to mark a queen in a swarm

Toma pens are the best I've used, avoid the Posca pens that the major suppliers sell as they wear off.

    Which poly nuc?

My pick is the BS Honey bees, based on the Maisimore but more durable, top bee space, better feeder and can be split into x2 three frame nuc so more versatile and forgoing proper bee space compatible with the Maisie extensions.

What colour to mark a queen in a swarm

I use a fluorescent orange for my unknown years, red can fades sometimes so can look pink-ish. Anything but the standard WYRGB colours is good I think.

    Your glove of choice!

I use the lakeland gloves as well, I seem to have a latex allergy which causes ny hands to come out in blotches if I use Marigolds and the likes. With the Lakeland ones I dont get that as they are latex free.

    Painting Poly Hives/Nuc

I liked solvent based gloss paint, adheres better than masonry paint, seems more durable, and the paint seems to stay cleaner looking.

BS Honey Bees New Poly Hive - Best in Class?

I note that you only mention the brood boxes, what's your thoughts on the hole in the supers? Angst doesn't seem a good choice of word, I doubt anyone is losing sleep over it. Its the inclusion of them that causes various issues one of which being leaky is not one. The bags of not even...
