    Importation of bees

I have to say that you get your eye in as a bee keeper and I often notice hives tucked away that a few years ago would never have registered. I moved two nucs on Saturday night which were on a nature reserve but I then saw a pretty well worn path up to them from the main path. Someone has been...

    Woodpecker damage

I have some hives on a woodland site. One of them has been attacked by Woody Woodpecker several times but non of the others. He has gone through the roof into the feeder below several times but a breezeblock weighing down a large plastic sack has stopped him. Poly Hive so just patched up with...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I checked the fondant on a small hive that I had reduced down with a lump of cellotex. Have a glass crownboard and the fondant on top of it. Bees were busy and bringing in lots of pollen. Making good use of a christmas jumper to keep them warm.

Sole trader, Limited Company or what?

I think that losses can also be offset against other income, so if you are part time you can offset any losses against income and reduce your taxbill

    Comb honey/Foundationless frames

Make sure that you put the foundationless frame between two straight drawn frames and you will be fine. Otherwise you will have a sticky mess and crushed angry bees to contend with because they will build the comb between frames in all sorts of ways to defeat you.

Small hive - transfer to a Poly Nuc box?

I have a hive where I left a feeder on which I filled with straw and took out the plastic cup quite a few bees made it up to the feeder but not back into the hive and perished in the super above. The remaining bees are in a quite small cluster. Would it be sensible to transfer them into a poly...

    Advice on queen introduction please

Yes, they were all over but I could brush them off and they didn't seem agressive and intent on harm!

    Advice on queen introduction please

went into them last night and there were a few more emergency queen cells being started, so I took them down. Only one frame had lavae that looked small enough for the bees to have another go with, so i took out those cells too. Will check again this afternoon and see whether there are anymore...

    Advice on queen introduction please

I have made up three nucs with two frames of brood and one of stores which I want to introduce mated queens to . These were made up 5 days ago and I tore down queen cells in two of these last night, and introduced the queen in a cage at the same time but the plastic tab is still intact. The...

    Foundationless Frames

My experience is you need to alternate drawn frames with undrawn foundationless ones to keep the bees straight. I have had so many that have been bridging frames that I will use foundation if there is a new undrawn box without drawn wax to alternate

    Wax moth in my super

It's in the freezer....I have only taken the frames without too much damage. I think that they will get a good spray of Dipel too

    Wax moth in my super

I have just opened a stack of supers I'd stored in the garage to extract and they are full of waxmoths. Can I feed this back to the bees? I am thinking that if I put the super on the floor, then a crown board and an empty super above that then the brood box.... Then the bees will recover...

    Maisemore sale

Well said Mr Jenkins. I am in no particular rush for my order, and grateful that I made it with a cup of tea in my hand and saved myself the drive. They are even paying the postage for me!

Thorns 12 frame manual extractor slipping

The shaft has to bear the full weight of 12 frames of honey plus the barrel. I think something more substantial has failed, but can't see what, I can't see a jubilee clip cutting the mustard unfortunately

    gloves

I will have to bow to your superior knowledge there Mr Jenkins! I find a quick squirt gets rid of the propolis on the gloves, so I imagine it would be doing bare fingers no good at all....turning them into soap if my chemistry recollection serves me right!

Thorns 12 frame manual extractor slipping

No, the gears are not worn. The smaller vertical gear appears to have slipped down a 3-4mm which means that they don't mesh properly.
