Artificial swarm without identifying queen - best method?

If you are keen to increase numbers by splitting , giving them more room in the form of a super to make a brood and half wont help . Keeping them in a smaller space with nectar coming in and an increasing population will bring on the swarming impulse . They will simply run out of room . This way...

Bailey Comb Change - opinions needed!

Agree with RAB above , i never bother with swapping entrances round . Put up with the situation as is until all brood has hatched and then remove the lower box . There will be more than enough time in the next few weeks to bring in enough pollen . Its in the same situation as a swarm would be ...

    Shook Swarm

All may not be lost .First thing to do is take out the qe seperating the two boxes so she can be looked after by the bulk of the colony . If you are thinking of shook swarming in the future , never run the risk of isolating the queen from the colony , its no different when the weather is as...

What did you learn on your first day as a beekeeper?

That it takes 3 'suggestions ' from your bee farmer mentor about trying these gloves instead of those c%$p leather ones you are crushing my bees with , before you catch on , swapping them for something thinner and with more feel . G

Checked through twenty plus colonies in the afternoon and not a single queen cell amongst them . Everything seems to be well behind where it should be for the time of year . One or two needed feeding . Not a swarm in sight ! G

Yes . Several have gone drone layer over Winter or did not lay well enough to generate enough bees to see them through Winter. The bee farmer I help out has had the same problem too so not just me .
