    A Cautionary Tale

Another check yesterday revealed that the hive which I thought was blessed with a DLQ in fact rejoiced in the attentions of a laying worker (eggs on the side of the cell, multiple eggs in same cell, pepper pot pattern and, of course, drone cells only). Too early to try and requeen. Shook all...

    Close to home?

When we started we had two hives about 30 yards from the house. But we run a B&B, and soon found that your average bad-tempered bee can fly faster than your average B&B guest can run. We have now out-housed them (the bees, that is!).

    Petrol

Does anyone know whether aviation fuel for private jets is likely to be in short supply? Now that WOULD be a concern!

    A Cautionary Tale

A little early in the year, perhaps, but given the warmth of the day I did my first serious apiary inspection this afternoon. New floors, brood boxes etc for all three hives. Last autumn, I left each hive with a full super of sealed stores. Early on, however, they seemed very light when...

    grandparent rights

Sorry to hear of your concerns, Pete. Children are a worry (at whatever age they have reached!). One way of getting some unbiased, helpful advice would be to contact your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau (where they will have the latest legal guidance together with other information on support...

    Pollen comming in

Seriously, though. Just had a look at my three colonies (yes - to my astnishment they have so far all survived the winter!). Only one was flying with enthusiasm, but lots of lovely pollen coming in.

    Pollen comming in

I feel that I should caution against this. I had suggested it to the current Lady DD on one playful occasion, but she objected on the grounds that it was anti-social, would frighten the servants and would seriously stain the bedsheets!

    Hive stand legs

Of course if they are all slanted in the same direction you may have a problem!

    Mr Bee ?

But wait you must! One of the most important lessons I have so far learned is the futility of rushing into inspections etc when there is nothing I can do whatever I find. If there are two Queens, then the workers will sort things out to their own satisfaction in their own time. If you have...

Floors and Brood Boxes. Looking forward to spring

I change the floors, BBs, crown boards and (if necessary) the roofs  A great deal of scrubbing and flaming for the current Lady DD, but it ensures as far as possible a good start for the bees. I also try to change four or so frames (substituting at least two of them for undrawn foundation).

    Heart disease and beekeeping.

Most of us will sympathise with the sense of impatience and urgency. Naturally you want to be up and running as quickly as possible, with vast quantities of honey to harvest. We all do! But there is a very good reason for the advice against starting with a full colony. A full...

    Bees not moving from Nuc.

Bit of a novice myself, so no doubt others with more experience will be along in a little while. But ... Did you feed them? If they went into a hive with only undrawn foundation, and you did not feed them syrup, it would have been hard work for them to draw it out. As a result, they might...

Should I stick to the OA plan

Just popped out to treat my bees. 8 degrees and dry. Bees more or less clustered, but didn't seem altogether appreciative of the treat I was giving them. Stronger colonies that I had expected, given their insatiable guzzling of stores throughout the autumn and my consequential need to keep...
