    Can you re use frames

I re-use mine. If it's sunny enough I use a solar wax extractor to melt out any remaining wax. Otherwise I boil then (a dozen at a time) in my boiler. Once to remove the comb and then a second time with washing soda to clean them up. Yes it can be messy (I have a perfect beeshed to do it in)...

    bees eating stores already?

I think their source must have been Finman! :smilielol5:

smallest number of frames worth extracting?

If your super frames have never had brood in then 99% time wax moth is not a problem. I have never had wax moth in super frames but brood frames is a different matter!

Can too much honey make them swarm?

No ladder but a rock next to the tallest hive that I could stand on to put on / remove the top super!!!

smallest number of frames worth extracting?

I understand and it was only a few years ago I was taking my first harvest! But still I would never suggest crush & strain as, as a beginner you want drawn super comb more than ever! If it's just a taste then dig a spoonful out of a frame (as suggested) and as per the other suggestion I really...

Can too much honey make them swarm?

That was last year (which in my short beekeeping experience was an exceptional year).

smallest number of frames worth extracting?

:iagree: Ok so some people will disagree but I cannot see a reason to crush & strain if you have an extractor! You will probably lose as much honey as using the extractor + destroying very valuable comb! Everyone will have a different opinion on minimum number of frames to extract, for me it...

    Extracting mess

First of all I ONLY use cold water as if there are any wax deposits in any of the honey hot water will make a mess! In terms of my bottling tanks, I almost never empty them completely so don't worry about the small amount under the valve. Otherwise you need to make a wedge so that you can tilt...

    bees eating stores already?

It can be surprising and worrying when it happens the first time but I still remember when I built a large population up in a colony and had 3-4 supers on most of which was capped or being capped. Then came a dearth and they empties almost all of it!! In terms of hives in the same apiary...

Can too much honey make them swarm?

As per the others answers, lack of space is one factor for causing swarms. If you give them enough space, both in the brood box(es) and super(s) then you don't necessarily have to remove full supers. It depends on how much they gather and whether you want really tall hives! Personally there...

    Food hygiene certificate

Food hygiene Registration of premises does not apply to the direct supply by the producer of small quantities of primary products to the final consumer or to local retail establishments directly supplying the final consumer. However, the BBKA does recommend that beekeepers who offer honey for...

Moving bees at this time of year

If you can physically lift them then you can move them at any time of year. If they have a good flow at the current sight I wouldn't want to move them until the flow is over personally. Ofc it's the easiest to move them in Spring when they are smaller and a lot lighter but it's not always the way.

    paint for marking queen

I, like a lot of other beekeepers, use Posca pens. You can find them online through a lot of different outlets. One tip though is don't use the pen to mark a queen before testing it on something else as in warm weather the ink/paint can come flooding out!!

Best time of day to shut up hive before moving site

I have blocked in colonies last thing at night in the dark but also come across some that were bearding out the front on a warm evening so got up at Sunrise and block them in then!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Car keys! :icon_204-2: Joking apart, in my case 2 things most important Mobile Phone - In case of emergencies My pocket camera - There is always something interesting that presents itself there and then!

How often can you split a colony?

There are far too many factors to give a straight answer. Location, weather, strength of colony, queen efficiency, forage availability etc. etc. What may work for one person may not for another. I could say I could make at least 8 Nucs from one of my best colonies but timing and reading the...

    Very sticky hive problem

My colonies vary hugely from those that appear to keep the frames pretty clean to those that glue everything together with double amounts the second I put the crownboard back on after an inspection!!! I use nitril gloves so it's not a problem and as suggested washing soda clean propolis.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Discovered that although a beesuit helps stop most bee stings they are not nettle proof if your wearing shorts underneath!!! Ouch!

    Differencies in swarm foundation drawing

:iagree: Although I always collect swarms in a 6 frame PolyNuc I leave the omf mesh open unless the swarms is low down and then I tape a piece of cardboard underneath as I have had a few instances of half the swarm in the box and half under the mesh!
