    Midsommer Murders

It’s the part all the old Cambridge foot lighters are trained for, from birth

    Midsommer Murders

Oh no I am being forced to watch 2 hrs of Midsommer Murders on Sunday. Wife and daughter insist I must be interested because it’s about a bee thief!!’ Presumably steals more than one !!!

    Bees not flying

    Bees not flying

Thanks all very reassuring. I wasn’t going to open them as didn’t see any point- I know they can reach the fondant. But it was frustrating, I will now spend less time standing outside the nuc willing something to happen- just wait and go with the flow

    Bees not flying

I have a poly nuc I have been overwintering. It had a young queen and seemed to be reasonably strong. My other hives have been busy over last few days but absolutely nothing coming out of nuc. I opened the roof and saw bees inside the fondant bag working away. It looked like there was still a...

Nothing worse than hives down there- itchy. No one else will heft anything in my PJs anymore

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Another week with single figure temperatures here (4th in a row ) Nothing much doing. Hefted my two hives in my PJs. heavy enough. hope the bees in the polynuc are ok. Cut a hole in the feeder two weeks ago so fondant could go directly into frames.

    When to stop syrup

Thanks all. I was worried that syrup would be best but it was too late so I should use fondant. I now know that I might be right or then again I might be wrong!! Seems the lesson is that I should step up to the plate and make my own mistakes. Btw I find the forum really informative but sometimes...

    When to stop syrup

I just hefted my hives and they are rally light. I fed some syrup beginning of September and they took it. But was seeing lots of activity/ pollen going in and there was lots of ivy so stopped. Is it too late to give more syrup (in Edinburgh). Or should I start feeding them fondant? Thanks

    Combining two brood to one

    Thanks. Makes perfect sense

    Combining two brood to one

Of course. Just typical human thinking it all has to be straight and controlled. Makes perfect sense. If they can crawl into a plastic bag of fondant they can crawl round a frame and get to The food

    Combining two brood to one

Thanks. Sorry if being thick, do you mean an eke big enough to hold a deep frame?

    Combining two brood to one

I am consolidating a hive to make a double brood single for over winter. But I will be left with a few brood frames with mostly uncapped honey. What can I do with it? I don’t have an extractor as I only do comb
