    Sweet Poison

Mike A thank you for posting that, I was aware of this when my 1st son was born and have not allowed any of my 3 boys to have drinks/sweets which are "low sugar" and contain aspartame ie ribena . It does not make sense to me to feed them anything artificial! Having said that I do believe in...

    Dead Hive

I have put 3 wasp traps on top of my hives, the cut plastic bottles with the spout inverted, with ribena in them and have caught 100s of wasps and a few hornets and a tiny handful of bees in them, they can not get out so they can not tell their mates where to come, It may encourage more wasps...

    Biological Wasp Trap

Yes, I hoover up any bugs in the kitchen, fruit flys etc and I attempt to get wasps but find they are genetically programmed to avoid nozzles.. BUT... I have put 3 wasp traps on top of my hives and they have been so sucessful, probably about 2-300 wasps in each( after 2 weeks) I use a cut off...

    Overwintering

As a newbee just wanted to know if you were to overwinter with a single national brood box, OMF and a full super with insulated roof without the queen excluder would that be the best situation to ensure adequate supplies for the winter? Sorry very basic question....:)

    Slow Bees

I have recently put on a perspex crown board so I can peek into the hive, very interesting!! Yesterday I showed a friend (ex beekeeper) the hive and we had a look in through the perspex. My friend commented on how "Slow" they were moving about, they were really just standing still on the frames...

when to take off the heather?

Those photos look lovely, a bit similar to our view on the Ashdown forest, I look at heather and struggle to find how these dry tiny flowers can produce nectar, they always feel a bit "crispy" to me. Clare:nature-smiley-005:

    My first inspection alone :)

well done Kaz, It is so great when you can answer a question with a bit of knowledge, and also your confidence growing day by day with them! I had a look at mine today, I was a bit worried as they were not flying and then one fell out with a dodgy wing. I sent me into a bit of a tizz so I...

    leave them to it

Hey Kazzmcc Have a look at the natural beekeeping trust or biobees There are lots of alternative methods and I think you can learn from both "ways" and take the bits that suit you (and your bees) Love Clare

On topic in an off topic way Don't start me on digital or mobile phones ( or wifi ) I don't carry a mobile phone, and refuse to use a phone without a cable. About 10 years ago I used a mobile phone, on my way to work in the car day in day out (M25 to LHR) after 1 month I developed a lump...

    OMF harvest

I have just had a look at the debris on the tray under my OMF I am treating with apiguard. After 7 days I have found about 20 mites, a couple of ants, lots of beautiful flakes of wax and lost/fallen pollen what are the black small rectangles? why are there so many individual bee legs? Cheers Clare

OK Idiot question - patience needed or don't click!

Oh heck I use boiling water, then keep it heating for a minute or two while it disolves then stick it in a sink full of cold water to cool it faster. I am also doing 2 kg sugar to 1 litre of water ( I thought that was the autumn ratio) Is it really bad for them? Clare
