    Smoker: Stainless Steel -v- Copper

It appears that a marginal preference for stainless steel [Dadant] over Copper exists amongst practitioners. Dadant it will be. Many thanks.

    Smoker: Stainless Steel -v- Copper

A quickie: Why would one opt for a copper smoker over stainless steel? Is it purely a personal preference or are there advantages/disadvantages to one over the other? My own (SS) is about to retire and am looking at replacing.

    Demaree Reaction

Ahh! I was so preoccupied and focused on the demaree (novel) process that I failed to consider that factor which is highly probable. Thank you O90 … been some time and delighted you are occasionally helping the ‘floundering’ again.

    Vaping PPE

EricBmont: May thanks for your clarifications. I am particularly obliged for your time in providing helpful links. I will consider the Moldex 9000 when the masks become available again. In my simplicity I thought filters were singe self-contained units, but it appears that the filters advised...

    Demaree Reaction

A reasonably docile hive has become very agitated since I demareed. Is this a common or frequent reaction to the method? Frustration at being thwarted. They didn’t produce Q cells in the top box (yet).

    Vaping PPE

Vaporising: To date have used Varrox Vap with basic nasal/mouth cove [Stood up-wind]. GasVap demands better face mask/filter. Searches have brought me to 3M 6000 series Mask and 60923 (Pink Yellow) Filters. Can any members advise as to what Facial PPE they are using/recommend when sublimating...

    Good trolley

Hi E, Positive note, I have been using same for many years and its been of invaluable service… would be lost without it. Also find it handy (with two pieces of cross timber) height wise, for placing a brood box whilst checking bottom box etc. One advisory note is to order up replacement inner...

    Oxalic Acid.

Many thanks for the replies/advice. I was aware of the legalities applying. JBM is (as expected) correct his comments a) as to the legalities and b) the regulation differing in parts of the Island. Where I am, Bee treatment is ‘technically’ strictly regulated. Bee Keeping Suppliers register for...

    Oxalic Acid.

To date I have used Api-Bioxal by way of Varrox vaporiser. Thinking of going GasVap. Is all OA of the same concentration – safe for Bee usage? If so, can Oxalic Acid be purchased other than in the Api-Bioxal formula/packaging?

Anduril, took your advice and Enrico, as ever correct - Thornes informed - simplya piece of packaging. Obliged to you both. P

    Hydrometer - Refractometer - Tape

I am assessing Honey water content – The Refractometer (Thornes) has a simple slip of tape at the front of prism … which has come adrift – is this a necessary part of the unit or simply packaging? Trying to draw down water content of honey but appear to be wasting time/energy. Still, advice of...

    Wasps burrowing into Poly-Feeder.

Whereas we are accustomed to wasp attention in the Autumn, this year it is nothing short of plague. They are sharing their attentions but the major focus is as anticipated, upon the weaker Nuc colonies. Noted this evening they had begun to burrow their way into a poly-feeder - a new experience...

    Finding Drone Layers

TTLTB, Millet, MCrofter .... Many thanks for your time and advice. As stated usually not a problem finding Q’s. On this occasion have sought and failed on four occasions – hard to fathom the pattern as only a very few sporadic eggs and some clusters but definitely drone. M Crofter, the awful...

    Finding Drone Layers

The season has delivered a series of DLQs. Usually no difficulty identifying and dispatching them. The problem is that in two hives and a Nuc I simply have repeatedly failed to find the offenders. Threw one down and let them re-enter through QX at entrance and an internal one as well. No sign of...

    Knight of the long stingers

Monday last moved brood box to another stand some 40ft+ away, found queen and dispatched her. Long sleeved vest, jumper and the suit allowed no stings (very warm)- Some in your face activity on return to reset the hive - Their behaviour was such as to be a potential danger or nuisance to...

    Ben Harden Method

Been using Ben's method for for a couple of years (cupkit not grafting) with cloak-board and all well. Was sceptical at first about sealed cells and non swarming, but the supercedure influence works. Good luck with it.

Bait hive has had 8 days of sustained activity

With Ian on this ... We know that when scouts appear about the house (Hives about 300 yards away) and sheds that swarming is likely imminent. Reinforced if they are unusually aggressive at this distance from the hive.
