What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not a good video but shows the levels of activity here today on Ivy, all colonies the same and dull overcast weather. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQsBbAbBCTA Chris

As I thought we need to stop killing wasps, must be why my bees are so healthy because all the wasps and hornets are too busy eating all those mites from my untreated hives. Chris

Me as well........and I'm still here so I'm not the other party (surprisingly). Chris

I think you have missed the point. The earwigs in the thread you linked to are postulated to have eaten the dead or perhaps nearly dead mites that fell from the OM hive base. There can be no suggestion that wasps enter honey bee colonies and eat mites.... .....although I suppose by some...

Interesting but not really applicable to a natural situation, quite a lot anyway if there was a strong colony, the weather was fine enough and there was enough food easily available. What it does tell us is that by and large my attitude is correct, we need to maximize our bio diversity if...

If I was going to put an attractant anywhere it would be a good distance from any hives. Here all the wasp family are busy feeding on fallen and hanging fruit as I said before, not going anywhere near the hives. Give them something easy and juicy to enjoy. Chris

I've not been reading this but is it being said that an average wasp nest will kill between 4,000 to 5,000 Kg of insects per season which as you say is 4-5 metric tonnes? I'm sure I've misread this Chris

    Feeding large numbers of hives

Did they tell you the colonies failed due to starvation? I know I don't have a large number of hives but most of mine don't require feeding either before or during winter and rarely, (I mean RARELY), have I lost a colony due to starvation. At present I'm feeding 7 colonies that are late for...

    Wasps

It is of course normal to not see many until late July / August and then for the numbers to rapidly increase as the colony grows expo. I wish we had a lot more this year, all there is to any degree here are Hornets - both types. I suppose the problem here is no sticky fizzy drinks or sweet...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Do remember to heft both sides of a hive, not just one side. Chris

    Honey rather than sugar

Well, yes and no. This is a snippet from an article I wrote. ""By the end of August the first few Cranes will have started to arrive in France from their breeding grounds that are situated principally in Russia, Finland, Sweden; Norway and the Baltic countries where each successful couple will...

Actually I doubt that you do understand my sentiments Karol, I'm interested in all life and not ending up with an impoverished "safe" world made up of theme parks with fizzy, not good for your health, drinks and junk food. Chris

    Honey rather than sugar

This shows where many thousands / hundreds of thousands spend the winter in France. I "work" for the LPO along with other structures. Chris

Your mixing things up Karol. Statistically it's one sting per 125 that results in complications that need medical intervention. I doubt that 1 in 125 shopping journeys result in harm to people. How many people are actually stung in the UK and then it may be 1 in 125 that require medical...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I wonder why that is, could it be the number of colonies you have? Oh, BTW, hand outs only apply to professional keepers paying full social charges / tax, I sort of doubt we have any French keepers on here with 200 plus colonies. As you say Mr Hart, a pinch of salt!!! My summer yield came in...
